How long does it take to cancel the service and transition to another ISP?

To transfer your services to a new provider is a minimum 10 working days.

Thanks - do I need to inform Plusnet directly or will the new ISP do this?

The new ISP do this, once you've started teh process we're not allowed to contact you about it other than to say that someone has requested your line to move to them.
However, it might be worth speaking to our Customer Options Team before you do this as they might have a tempting offer for you to stay: 0800 013 2632

Thanks for the information Chris.
i'm afraid that my wish to move ISP is prompted by service (or rather a complete absence of), rather than price.
If the service centre staff (and those on @plusnethelp and webchat) were as helpful as you, maybe I would have stayed.
Thanks again for answering my question.
