Can someone clarify SMTP authentication for me?

I use SMTP authenticated SMTP on my plusnet account, to send emails from outside the network on my mobile. When I switched, I also switched my wife's mailbox and for many months things seemed to work fine.
These last few days my wife has not been able to send emails. I cured the problem by turning off authentication, and read else where on this forum that authentication only works with the main account login and password, not with mailbox log-ins. But why has the problem only arisen recently?
My wife is using Entourage, on her Macbook with 10.5. and was unable to send emails even via home network. As I say  it had work for months beforehand (I think).

It has always been the main account login and password ONLY.

For sending, you only need to login to the default mailbox/account surely?

Re: Can someone clarify SMTP authentication for me?

I've never known SMTP auth to work with a mailbox password so not sure why you've only recently started having problems. Don't quote me on this but I think using mailbox credentials will be an option when we move to IronPort for outbound mail.
