Can ping but cant browse [SOLVED]

I know that this should be simple but it is foxing me at present. Everything works OK with a LAN cable - it's wireless that is giving me a problem. With wifi these are my results:
ping 212.58.246.81 - works OK
ping www.bbc.co.uk - works OK
Browse to 212.58.246.81 - no response
Browse to www.bbc.co.uk - no response
Router: DGN1000
OS: Windows 7
DHCP on
Firewall off (while I fix this problem)
Wireless encryption off (while I fix this problem)
What do I do next? Thanks in advance.

Re: Can ping but cant browse

Still struggling with this I'm afraid. It doesn't make any sense to me that I can ping an address but not browse to it. It proves I've got an internet connection with DNS. I can connect to the router no problem. My wifi signal is strong. I have a second laptop that also experiences the same problem.
I restored factory settings on my router but that didn't solve the problem. What was also strange was that I can connect to an FTP server but when I do something like a directory listing or a download the connection times out. Maybe there is a problem when transferring larget amounts of data.  Cry
The only thing that seems strange to me is the naming of my networks. When the LAN cable is plugged in I have an SSID = Fred, a LAN "home network" called Fred, and a wireless "home network" called Fred 2.  (This is Win 7.) I don't know whether this is causing any conflicts. (Obviously when I try out the wireless network I unplug the LAN cable and only have the wireless network listed.)

Can you post here what you get if you run
>ipconfig /all
from a command prompt.

Re: Can ping but cant browse

That looks OK

When you said -[quote=SCookie - Reply #1]I can connect to the router no problem
Can you clarify whether you meant that -
1) The PC established a wireless connection to the router correctly - as it obviously does from the above info !
or
2) Can you wirelessly BROWSE to 192.168.0.1 and see the router's login or status page ?

Do the laptops have any Bluetooth capability ?

What happens if you try to wirelessly run -
> pathping www.bbc.co.uk
from the "Command Prompt"

You might also try -
> ipconfig /renew
from the "Command Prompt"

Re: Can ping but cant browse

Thanks for your help Purleigh. It's appreciated.
I may have been confused about connecting to the router login before. I cleared the browser cache and then browsed to 192.168.0.1 - no response.
ipconfig /renew doesn't solve the problem.
The laptops don't have bluetooth.

Re: Can ping but cant browse

So does browsing to 192.168.0.1 work with a WIRED connection ?
If so, re-enable the router's FIREWALL as this is sounding more like a local wireless or Windows issue rather than an internet connectivity issue.
If you are running Internet Explorer as your browser, then while you have a working WIRED connection (for the above test), can you install Firefox - in case this is a weird browser problem.
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
So while still wired and the router firewall is ENABLED check that Internet Explorer and Firefox BOTH can access www.bbc.co.uk and to 192.168.0.1
Then try both browsers to the same addresses using the WIRELESS connection.

Re: Can ping but cant browse

Purleigh,
>So does browsing to 192.168.0.1 work with a WIRED connection ?
Yes.
I use FF already, and get the same responses from both FF & IE. I've got my firewall back on now.  Smiley
Just to confuse things  www.bbc.co.uk seems to be offline at present, but I tried with other sites instead.
So, while still wired and the router firewall is ENABLED I checked that Internet Explorer and Firefox BOTH can access www.bbc.co.uk/news and to 192.168.0.1 OK. No problems there.
I then tried with wireless. Now here's the strange thing - they are currently connecting, only sometimes, and then usually very slowly, although sometimes near normal speed. I had this a couple of days ago, but since then the connection had failed altogether. This afternoon it seems it is back. BTW: Windows says my signal strength is excellent, and I'm on channel 6 - with inSSIDer telling me that the signal is way stronger than all others in the area.
So I'm starting to think that this is an RFI problem, or maybe a hw failure in the router wireless circuits. I'd guess that the browsers are timing out when fetching web pages, and that is why pinging worked but browsing didn't. Appreciate your thoughts, particularly on how to tell if it is an RFI/interference problem.

Re: Can ping but cant browse

Doohhh !  What's the chances of the BBC homepage being down when you are using it for a test ! - I just checked and it is really is not there !
Quote
Now here's the strange thing - they are currently connecting, only sometimes, and then usually very slowly

Are you saying that occasionally you CAN browse to a web page wirelessly ?
As my next step was going to be disabling the PC firewall (now that the router firewall is enabled), but if browsing works occasionally it is not going to be firewall related !
So following the RFI route -
I am not familiar with "inSSIDer", so does it show signal strength in each wireless channel, and does it show signal on hidden SSID ?
Is it worth stepping the router through each empty RF channel to see if you can move to a more reliable one ?
1) So firstly make a list of all the RF channels being used by your neighbours - so you know which ones to avoid !
2) Connect your second laptop to the router using an ethernet cable, and login to the wireless settings page.
3) Use the second laptop to step the router through all the unused channels from 1 to 13.
4) For each channel number, get your first laptop to establish a connection, and use "inSSIDer" to record signal levels.
5) While on each channel it is probably worth trying to browse - at least to 192.168.0.1, or to http://www.plus.net
Hopefully by the end of that you will have discovered the magic combination.
When stepping the router just <apply> the settings - don't reboot the router each time.
On the first laptop, if it does not automatically change to the next channel, then try the Windows wireless connection repair button, and/or the > ipconfig /renew

Re: Can ping but cant browse

You can connect to router wireless but have no internet access? Does the admin page load? Try changing the wi fi channel.

Re: Can ping but cant browse

OK, I'm back from travel and have made some progress on the problem, I think.
Recap: LAN connection works just fine. Wifi does not. Wifi can ping an ip address, can ping a www address, but browsing to any website, or to the router admin page, does not work.
Here's how I've (temporarily) fixed this: I change the wifi channel. After that the wifi works OK. It does not matter which channel (I get good signal on all channels). If I power cycle the router (without changing channel) the wifi does not work until I change to a new channel again.
This sounds like a router fault to me. Anyone else had this?

Re: Can ping but cant browse

When you power cycle the router, does the WiFi channel stay on the last number that you had set, or does it reset back to a default channel number ?
