No as the router runs DHCP which gives you your internal ip address, which then uses NAT/PAT to your external IP. You modem will hold the settings for external interface and the router the internal side.
Hope that helps

If it's FTTC then yes.
You need to run PPPoE on the computer, e.g. http://community.plus.net/library/broadband/fibre-help-how-to-set-up-a-pppoe-dialler-in-vistawindows...

If FTC , then yeah but surely not on adsl unless he only has one device to connect to and this will en make his external ip visible on both sides of his network.

The original question implied that there is only one PC.
If there was more than one PC, then the PC connected to the modem could be configured to provide connection sharing etc, using a second ethernet port.

For extra connections he could always use a switch.  Crazy

@OP you answered your own question, on ADSL the router is the modem.  It just has one or more ports built in to allow one or more devices to get online via it.  So unless you have a specific reason for wanting a specific network layout, Any ideas? isn't enough information to give an answer.

@Gus - not strictly true, though normally the device is a combined modem/router. The TP-Link TD-8616 is just a modem (though now discontinued) and requires the computer to use a PPPoA or PPPoE connection - the similar TD-8816 has a single port router embedded.
