Can anyone tell me the cause of these disconnects?

Hi,
I have a Billion 7800N and my line had been stable for around a month untill 2 disconnects, can anyone tell me if there are any clues in the log as to what caused them?

To use a telephone call analogy, in the first instance it looks like the line went dead.  In the second instance does "terminated by peer" mean that Plusnet did the broadband equivalent of putting the phone down on you?

Re: Can anyone tell me the cause of these disconnects?

Hi Steve
ReedRichards is on the money above^
They're both nothing really to worry about, the first was probably caused by routine BT maintenance tbh (seen as its between 00:00 and 03:00) -- although the connection came back very quickly (could of been just a random blip though)
the second was probably either the same as above - or:
a) pn maintenance
b) DLM changing your profile/line settings
c)pn changing your ip/traffic management profile
d) completely random one-off event Smiley

I certainly wouldnt be too concerned, around 1 month uptime is absolutely fantastic tbh.

Hi SteveArnold,
I've checked our connection logs for your line and the amount and frequency of disconnections are nothing to worry at the moment.  See below:

Certainly monitor this however and let us know if they continue/get worse.

Re: Can anyone tell me the cause of these disconnects?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, 25 days is a record my previous best IIRC is around 8 days.
The only moan I have about the 7800N is the log only appears to hold around 4 days entries, records a --mark-- every hour and theres no way to have it send a email if there is a disconnect, unless anyone knows otherwise?
Thanks
Steve

Re: Can anyone tell me the cause of these disconnects?

Steve, the 7800N has a syslog function.
This means that you can get it to send those "logs" to another machine (provided the receiving machine is on of course!) which will add the lines to a database (dependant on what software you use)
This means you can scroll through the logs, and see "what happened" even if the router reboots unexpectedly!

Can anyone recommend software to use with the syslog function that Matt_2k34 mentions?
I was hoping for something similar to my old Netgear DG834N which could be setup to email the logs hourly/daily or if the 7800N had a option to choose what entries are made to the log would have been ideal.
By the way I'm running 1.06b firmware, didn't see any real need to update - if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Bit of a side issue but what is that message "couldn't increase the MTU to 1500" all about?  What's wrong with 1500?

Re: Can anyone tell me the cause of these disconnects?

I've no idea why its trying to increase mtu to 1500, the only mention of it is in the WAN profile under Advanced>Configuration of the 7800N and according to that it's set at 1492.

You need a syslog server, just google it and you'll see various ones available for free depending on which OS you use.
