Hi peeps,
I'm encountering a problem that I've had about twice before now. Half the sites I use cannot be accessed. They just hang.
Here are 3 examples;
www.littlewoods.com
www.speedtest.com
www.itv.com
They just hang, I can see the address change on the browser suggesting that it can find the site, but nothing ever loads.
Have test hard wired PC and two wireless connected smartphones (Galaxy S3 and HTC One X)
As before, I thought it might be a DNS issue. I use Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but have changed to OpenDNS and no luck. I used to have problems with slow DNS via Plus.net hence the change
I have tried;
No change. Also disabled any add-on's I have on them as well.
I have rebooted my router, left it switched off for 30 seconds etc... no change
I have run a full malware check using spybot and Malwarebytes
I have run a full AV scan using Avast
Both come back clean as a whistle
I have run tracert to littlewoods and get the following;
C:\Users\Alex>tracert www.littlewoods.com
Tracing route to e3596.b.akamaiedge.net [95.101.254.167]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 4 ms 2 ms 2 ms 192.168.0.1
2 21 ms 19 ms 19 ms lo0-central10.pcl-ag02.plus.net [195.166.128.183]
3 18 ms 18 ms 19 ms link8-central10.pcl-gw02.plus.net [84.93.249.46]
4 18 ms 17 ms 17 ms xe-0-2-0.pcl-cr02.plus.net [212.159.1.2]
5 19 ms 18 ms 18 ms ae2.pcl-cr01.plus.net [195.166.129.6]
6 18 ms 19 ms 18 ms ae1.ptw-cr01.plus.net [195.166.129.0]
7 28 ms 34 ms 18 ms 10ge-linx.r1.lon1.uk.as5580.net [195.66.225.111]
8 31 ms 25 ms 24 ms tge5-8.ams02-1.nl.as5580.net [78.152.34.77]
9 26 ms 28 ms 28 ms akamai-20940-gw.ams15-1.nl.as5580.net [78.152.39.246]
10 24 ms 24 ms 23 ms 95.101.254.167
Trace complete.
I believe the last IP is littlewoods, from googling "95.101.254.167" (6th result). Btw other tracert's also appear to complete successfully.
Any suggestions? I cannot see browsing issues listed on the plus.net service status. Interestingly whilst my wife was unable to access littlewoods from home yesterday, she was also unable to view it from her o2 mobile using data connection - but I was able to view the site as usual from work (8 miles away). A colleague said that Plus.net use the o2 network and that maybe there were routing issues?? I'm not sure to the accuracy of that claim though. Today I tried other sites which was when I realised its a wider issue.
As I said its happened a couple of times before now, and previously it resolved itself after a couple of days. Interested to know whether its something my end or not.... my IT forte is not Internet or networking, so please appreciate that my troubleshooting is a little basic when it comes to web connectivity. I don't 'think' its an issue my end.
NB: I never usually have any browsing issues. My router is a Netgear DGN2000 and the logs are clear. Browsing is usually fast and 100% reliable unless there are site issues.

Thanks Oldjim, I had forgotten to do that.
No change though. I've disabled it completely and restarted the browsers.

Its my D-Link router thats at fault.
I use the Netgear as my ADSL modem, it has a D Link DIR655 as the gigabit router internally on the DMZ.... if I connect the phones wirelessly to the Netgear, everything is fine. Its the D Link doing something (although I haven't changed anything, and it has been rebooted).
If I find out what it is, I'll report back. Thanks for the reply

Thanks ReedRichards.
I resorted to the backup I took of my DIR-655's configuration when I first configured it, and all net traffic is routing correctly again. I've compared every tab under advanced, and the ONLY difference I could see was the MTU had reverted back to 1492 from 1500. I recently changed the MTU to try and get iPlayer working properly on the xbox (some posts online suggested lowering the MTU). I had previously set my Netgear modem to MTU of 1500, and the DLink one to 1500. I then lowered my Netgear modem MTU to 1492, but didn't lower the MTU on the DLink.
I'm not a wizard with the Internet and routing, although I know that for Internet routing they should have been the same (I think the PC can be different as its LAN traffic not WAN traffic).
Can you explain how the difference could affect it?
I reverted to that backup, noticed the MTU was the only difference then came here to post that, only to see your reply asking to check MTU. Good shout
