Since Feb 15th it has been going down rapidly to an all time low tonight of 981kbps.
I've looked on the Plusnet FAQ page and have been advised to try another router or register a fault and face a possible call out charge from BT if the fault is not on their equipment. That's fine if I had another router but as I don't I suppose the alternative is to have to buy another router to replace the 4month old one supplied by Plusnet. Any other suggestions please.
Thanks. kw
PS I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to PC stuff.

Are you using any extension cables/sockets? As you don't have a test socket, you'll need to use the master socket. Can you change the filter and make sure you are not using any extension cables between the router and the socket. Remove any telephony equipment from any other extensions you might have. The reason your speed has dropped is because noise has caused the SNR to rise to 22dB. I can reset this back but there's no point in doing that until we try to eliminate anything that could have potentially caused the noise in the first place.

SNR, I assume is Signal to Noise Ratio.
There was one phone in an extension that had no filter! (Recently fitted)
I changed the filter to the router and unplugged all other equipment.
The speed is now averaging 3400kbps. Better, but still only 50% of where we were up to 15th Feb.
My neighbour has offered to try his router on my line does it matter what type?
jelv, thanks for the reply -- ^as above^.
Thanks again, Pete.

Unfortunately I don't have the username or password for the Thompson Gateway link.

Download speed achieved during the test was - 5 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600 Kbps-7.15 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8.13 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7.15 Mbps
I don't know what changed but I'll be happy if it stays like that!

Looks like the unfiltered phone wasn't helping matters. Our profile is now 7.15Mbps. What speeds are you getting now?

the SNR is 25dB so this will be causing the lower sync, and hence the lower profile. If you are still using the master socket with nothing else plugged in then I would suggest raising a fault.
