Broadband speed

Hi PN,

I recently moved house and took my Plusnet account with me. The process was smooth and I had broadband as soon as I moved in, which was great. I also noticed the speed was good, so I was happy... Unfortunately the speed  gradually dropped and the SNR margin increased as the line was a bit noisy.

I have since discovered this was due to internal extension wiring in the house, which I have now tidied up and improved the connection to the master socket.

Would it be possible to increase my speed back up to where it was 3 weeks ago, please?

I was getting around 14Mbps, now I'm getting about 6.5Mbps. currentLine Stats below.

Re: Broadband speed

Hello racedemon!

I've just put a DLM reset into motion which should have you back to previous download speeds within the next day or two.

Re: Broadband speed

Thanks Adam, I hope it works, stays stable and no dropouts. I'll update after testing stability in a week or so.

SN Margin is now 19.9dB! This is ridiculous. Isn't the normal target 6dB

Re: Broadband speed

That rather suggests there is still a line problem somewhere. Have you performed a quiet line test? Check out the speed issues thread - see the link below.

Re: Broadband speed

Yes, I'd agree there's a deeper issue at play which we need to nail down.

I'd try following the checks here as your next step: https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/connection-troubleshooting/

Following that report a fault over at http://faults.plus.net then drop me a reply back here so I can get that logged for you without further a do.

Re: Broadband speed

No, I just  need to target SNR to be put to 6dB, my speed increased back to where it was when I moved in. If I then get disconnections it will reset and target a higher dB. I know what I'm doing thanks "townman". PN please respond.

Re: Broadband speed

Sorry, but you are wrong here. The target SNRM could be reset to 6dB (as has been done before) however if there is a line fault then the DLM will automatically raise the SNRM again to achieve line stability ... at the expense of speed.

Proper problem elimination (rather than fudging symptoms) is required here.

Re: Broadband speed

Adam, yes I've done all the trouble shooting, as explained in the original post. The line is quiet, extension wiring all but eliminated. There is something unusual with the DLM reset, it would normally try and target 6dB, am I right? It appears to not have done that and just increased the dB. As you can see in the first post it was 12dB and ultra-stable, but slow. So in terms of stability did not need an even higher margin. Now around 20 dB is just totally wrong

Re: Broadband speed

Good stuff, endlessly resetting SNR won't help as we need to fix the underlying issue.

Please report a fault and we'll be able to take things from there.

Re: Broadband speed

Indeed - it points to either a line fault (possibly a balance issue) or REIN / SHINE neither of which one wants to contemplate until all other avenues have been eliminated.

Re: Broadband speed

The one thing I can't test is another router as I don't have a spare.

Re: Broadband speed

If you'd like we can look at sending you a new router?

You'd only have to pay postage and packaging.

Re: Broadband speed

There is another possibility - that the DLM reset didn't work.

Previous line speeds can be found in the 582n's system log - if the downstream speed never significantly changed from 6,656k, then it would appear that the DLM reset to remove the banding didn't actually work.
