Broadband speed query - possible network setup issue

I am paying for 8MB MAX speed and just did a broadband speed test on my cabled pc and got the following result which did not seem too bad :

However,my wireless connected laptop is very slow connecting and often times out. I did  a tracert test to see the outcome and got this result:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\age 11 and over>tracert plusnet.com
Tracing route to plusnet.com [74.53.28.50]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  mygateway1.ar7 [192.168.100.24]
  2    37 ms    37 ms    36 ms  lo0-homesurf.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.54]
  3    37 ms    36 ms    37 ms  ge1-0-0-205.ptn-gw01.plus.net [84.92.3.97]
  4    37 ms  mygateway1.ar7 [192.168.100.24]  reports: Destination protocol unr
eachable.
Trace complete.
My network is set up using a DLINK G624T Router and I got the status log:
ADSL Status

ADSL status shows the ADSL physical layer status.

ADSL Firmware Version: 6.00.01.00 - 6.00.01.00 - 6.00.04.00 Annex A - 01.07.2b - 0.54
ADSL Software Version: V3.00B01T02.UK-A.20060621
Line State Connected
Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
Annex Mode Annex A
Max Tx Power -38 dBm/Hz

Item Downstream Upstream Unit
SNR Margin 7 26 dB
Line Attenuation 28 17 dB
Data Rate 6816 448 kbps

In My Network connections though I have the router showing as the internet gateway at a speed of 614.4 kbs and the Local Area Connection at 100Mbps
I don't know if I have set up my LAN the right way or if this is all correct?

Re: Broadband speed query - possible network setup issue

Hi Suzanne,
Happy New Year to you too Smiley
It would probably help us all to know what sort of router that you are using as it seems to have quite a strange default gateway?
Other than that, your line stats look pretty decent - as your wired PC shows.
It also looks almost as if the traceroute is looping, which is a little strange.

Re: Broadband speed query - possible network setup issue

I think the problem with the tracert is that the target is in the Far East, who knows what mischief might befall anyone that reaches it with a badly protected computer.
The correct target is plus.net.

Re: Broadband speed query - possible network setup issue

You hard wired speed is fine. For the wireless down load netstumbler free from http://www.netstumbler.com/ this will show you any noise and who else is on what channel. It could be there is someone else on the same channel.
Try changing the channel and see if that improves it also look for things like microwaves, phones, radios etc which may block the signal. Try moving the router or antenna as often a move of a few feet may make all the difference.

Re: Broadband speed query - possible network setup issue

Hi All and thanks for the helpful advice 🙂

My router is the DLink G624T but I have changed the gateway from the default 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.100.24 as I read somewhere that it is a good decoy to veer away from the default.
I don't know why the tracert is looping but did another one with plus.net and got:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>tracert plus.net
Tracing route to plus.net [212.159.8.137]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    4 ms    20 ms    1 ms  192.168.100.24
  2    38 ms    38 ms    38 ms  lo0-homesurf.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.54]
  3    37 ms    39 ms    39 ms  ge1-0-0-205.ptn-gw01.plus.net [84.92.3.97]
4    65 ms  192.168.100.24  reports: Destination protocol unreachable.
Trace complete.
Stranger and stranger!!
