Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

Now I've just noticed that as a result of fiddling with the master socket, the router is reporting a sync speed of 7.9 instead of 7.6:
Uptime: 0 days, 0:16:42
DSL Type: ITU-T G.992.1
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 7,904
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 28.81 / 216.09
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.9 / 19.8
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 12.0 / 19.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 27.0 / 6.2
System Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ----
Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote): BDCM / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 9 / -
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / -
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / -
Loss of Link (Remote): -
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 325 / -
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 292
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 2
HEC Errors (Up/Down): - / 151
Could this be good news?

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

Remove the lower half to expose both test sockets then try plugging a phone in to each test socket and check for a dial tone. One should be dead and the other live; the live one is the genuine master. If both are live your phones are incorrectly wired.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

Don't unplug the other one, you've already done it, thanks jelv  Roll_eyes his modem/router is in the test socket at the moment!
Still disconnect the wires from 3 & 4. The other socket is obviously connected to the line as a master should be, otherwise the Test socket would not have worked.
Now this supposed extension socket that has a test socket behind, yet seems to have two lots of terminals on the removable plate?
There should be a quick way of checking how this is wired - plug a filter and phone into the test socket and see if you get dial tone. Dial 17070 and check the number is the same (your number) if you do get dial tone.
My guess is that this is a pre-2007 master socket and faceplate - have a look on this page if it seems different.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

Right jelv, I've done as you suggest, and confirmed that the socket I'd been assuming was the master is indeed the master.
That's one minor worry out of the way!

Done, and OK

Yes, it looks pretty much like that.
All that remains is to remove the wires as suggested - I'll get round to it later.
Meanwhile, I've put both faceplates back on and am working normally.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

I do wish you'd removed those wires before putting the face plates back!
It probably wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference had the second test socket been live as you have such a short line to the exchange as long as the wires were disconnected. As it is, because this second socket is a master, you still have a bell wire connected to the line via the capacitor in this second socket.
If you'd removed the wires, the stats when you reconnected the modem/router would most likely be exactly what one would expect to see.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

I'm a bit hesitant about disconnecting these wires - it looks a bit fiddly, and I need to experiment a bit with some tweezers.
I really don't want to do any irreversible damage here.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

It's just terminals 3 & 4 so it then looks like this

I've now disconnected the wires as requested on both master and slave sockets;  I'm plugged in to the test socket on the master:

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

(Last post same stats - you can edit the post remove & replace them)
Well for 3mins 10 secs, the errors are brilliant  Wink  Being a little more serious it's how the error count goes from now. As you've eliminated any potential pick-up of interference from your internal wiring, then I'd expect the count to be lower compared to previously and I wouldn't expect any drops in connection although when you started the thread you had been up for nearly 20 days.
However, I'm a little surprised that the sync speed is not a touch higher but as Interleaving on your line is turned on, some old 20CN Exchange Line Cards won't allow the highest speeds. (Interleaving is a type of error correction btw). If the line seems stable with a lower error count then I think an SNR rest would be worth trying as this would reset the line when it might sync at the highest speeds and give a 7 or 7.15Mbps profile.
With the current sync speed your profile is 6.5Mbps, so download speeds should be upto that (subject to any congestions issue at any instant).
Post up some more stats later on this evening or when convenient after that.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

I've disconnected, replaced the faceplate and reconnected.  Sync speed seems to have crept up from 7,904 to 7,936.  Is it likely to go much higher?
What's an 'SNR reset' and is this something I can do?
As requested, I'll post some more stats later on

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

The highest sync speed on 20CN is just over 8Mb (8128 I think),so you're not far away from that. Give me a couple of minutes to perform a quick line test.

Re: Broadband speed deteriorating

Looking at the line stats from the test I'm agreeing with Anotherone, the line looks stable so it'd be good to check later on tonight/tomorrow to see how many errors show before making changes to the interleaving.
