Broadband router losing connection - wireless and wired - 'Connected without Internet'

Hi,

The loss of internet connection is happening more frequently and becoming a daily annoyance. It happens on our wireless devices and also our ethernet wired TV and laptop. All the lights on the router and wifi box are green, but when trying to connect, our devices say we are connected without internet.

Turning everything off and on will resolve it, but it could happen almost 30 mins later.

I've gone through all the broadband troubleshooting (apart from trying a different router as we don't have a spare), and done the Plusnet Diagnotics Bot who checked the line from the network and refreshed the connection to the hub. No problem seen, but no improvement either.

What is the next step to take? Does anyone have any fixes?

Welcome to the forums @katandgav . Which router do you have, and what is the 'wi-fi box'? Do the router lights change colour/flash when you lose connection?

Re: Broadband router losing connection - wireless and wired - 'Connected without Internet'

Hi John,

We have 2 boxes (I think what I called the wifi box, is actually the router now I look at them).

1 is a BT Openreach and the 2nd is a technicolor TG582n router.

The router- the power light never flashes. It's steady green always. The ethernet and internet lights always seem to flash or blink a bit, as does the wifi green light. I'll have to wait for the connection to be lost to double check what they all do during that time, but we never lose lights and they are never red or amber.

OK - sounds like you have one of the original 'two-box' FTTC connections. If your lights don't change colour, then it suggests you are not losing sync with the Openreach network, so - and this is only a guess - it could be the age of those two units.

Have you never been offered, or asked for, a newer Hub - the  connection setup you have now is horribly ancient?

Re: Broadband router losing connection - wireless and wired - 'Connected without Internet'

Hi John,

Never offered a new router, no. We are out of contact (by years due to uncertainty in our rental situation), so just rolling over monthly at the moment. Things have settled a bit so we may be able to get a renewal for 18-24 months at a lower rate. Would a new router be provided if we did this? I think we have had current router at least 10 years.

Is it that old routers can't cope with as many devices now, or its close to end of life?

Thanks!

Re: Broadband router losing connection - wireless and wired - 'Connected without Internet'

@katandgav OK, understand your position.  If you took out a new contract, and requested a new Hub at the same time - I understand they are not automatically provided these days - then one would be provided for the £6.99 postage charge.

It depends how much and what you have connected - the TG582N was really only designed for ADSL in the days when that was only what most people could get, and from memory it does have some connected devices limitations. As I said though, it is old tech, and a 10 y.o. one will be struggling.
