Broadband keeps dropping connection

Broadband keeps dropping connection at random intervals for about 10-20 seconds

 

this can occur every hour or after a few hours.

This issue also occurred using my own netgear router

but seems specific to plusnet as the same netgear router had no issues with another ISP.

 

Is plusnet just unable to maintain a connection?

Our tests are showing a external fault on the line so we've raised that for further investigation.

Openreach engineer arrived, spent about 5 hours finding and fixing faults on the line.  said he found at least 10 faults.

Said we are 3000m from the nearest exchange, I assume that explains

 on the router helpdesk

Finally he ran a new cable from our house to the pole outside.

 

 

This seems to have improved things a little but still getting disconnects, 2-3 per night, very frustrating.

whats the average disconnects for a plusnet user?? 

 is 4-6 a day normal  about 1-2 hours then reset

Thanks for getting back in touch. I'm glad to hear that the engineer has been able to find and resolve some faults on the line, though it's disappointing that you're still experiencing drops in connection.

 

I've tested your line today and the test is no longer picking up any physical faults but it appears that a setting on the line (the SNR margin) has dropped too low for the level of interference and the length of the line. I've adjusted this now to try and stabilise your connection. Please keep an eye on things over the next 24-48 hours and let us know if you continue to experience connection drops.

There still seems to be more drops than we'd like see so I'd recommend raising a fault to us at http://faults.plus.net

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

An engineer came out in December. The normal, wow your 3000m from the nearest exchange. He replaced the (as he put it) rusty old wet box on the pole in the garden.    This again seemed to fix the issue for a while.  

 

But it now seems to be back, tho a little less severe.

4-5 disconnects a day on average, 11 recorded last night on the log

Is it time for another engineer? Fault report etc.   We seem to be replacing all 3000m of old cable 1 pole at a time...... .. . .

Or is there some setting that can be adjusted on the software side to make the connection more stable on a dirty line?

Hi @rodgaskell,

 

The noise margin's dropped back down again to 3db so I've reset it back up again initially to 6 but it might be worth setting it to 9 to try and stabilise it as much as possible (this will likely drop the throughput speed down a little, though). 

 

If this doesn't work, which as the history shows it might not, then I'm afraid it's another fault report I'm afraid.
