Broadband has slowed right down

Hi,
My broadband is virtually non existent this evening (20:00, 25/10/2018)
It has been okay uptown the last few weeks.
Speeds have gradually got worse for no apparent reason.
Tonight, the BT Wholesale speed test barely registered.
Can someone look into this please?

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Hi @lhmcr01,

Thank you for getting in touch with us through the community forums regarding your issue. I have run some checks for you and it is showing your connection is running at around 7mbps and a solid connection. What is it like today, are you still experiencing the same issues?

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Hi, the problem is in the evenings.
It happens without heavy usage (Streaming, gaming etc...)
The speed in the evenings can drop to unusable levels, even for basic web browsing.

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Hi @lhmcr01 thanks for confirming.

Testing isn't highlighting what could be causing this and the sync is at 8mbps today. Does this happen regardless of using a wired or wireless connection?

When the issue occurs again, can you run a speed test at speedtest.btwholesale.net using a wired connection and ensure no other devices are connected to the WiFi, if you could then use the further diagnostics by inputting your landline number, this will upload the results to our server.

Let us know hoe you get on. - Lauren

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

More evening slowdowns tonight.

BT Wholesale Speed Test initial test at 17:29 on 09/11/2018 shows a speed of 0????

Another test at 17:31 on the same date shows 3Mbps, then another at 17:34 goes back to 0 with a ping latency of 142.38, and an upload speed of 0.15.

The further diagnostics test states:

Your speed test has completed and the results are shown above, however during the test an error occurred while trying to retrieve additional details regarding your service. As a result we are unable to determine if the speed you received during the test is acceptable for your service. Please re-run the test if you require this additional information.

A speed of 6.68Mbps came up on further diagnostics.

All it takes for the speed to slow right down is for someone else in the house to do basic web browsing on a tablet for example, this causes the speed to drop???

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Hi @lhmcr01,

Thanks for the detailed information you've provided.

From the errors displayed on that table I'm confident that the router is at fault here.

I've dispatched you a new one which should be with you within the next 3-5 working days, please let us know how you get on.

We're sincerely sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Hi,

Unfortunately, similar issues have started again.

Any time that another device connects to the router, it seems to slow the speed right down for that and other connected devices.

I have tried resetting the router but this does not solve the problem.

The BTW speedtest results are: Download Speed: 6.64

Upload Speed: 0.15

Ping Latency: 262

A note that ping latency can range anything from 262 to 6791.

Kitz distance is 2.37km (Direct)

Router stats are:

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Morning @lhmcr01, thanks for the update.

We're sorry to hear that this issue has reoccurred.

*EDIT as I'd not registered my previous response, regarding RMA of router* (Lack of coffee this AM)

I'll update when have investigated further.

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Is it me, or is the upstream banded at 448?

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

I meant to add that the above results are for the new router I received in November last year.

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

@Mustrum The line is on 20CN so the max upload possible is 448kbps unless max premium is taken at a extra cost of £7.83

@lhmcr01 By devices connected to the router do you mean just them being connected or actually using the connection?

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Yes, the devices are actually using the connection, it has been ok for a while, connecting two or three devices without any problems.
This has only just started.

Re: Broadband has slowed right down

Are the devices which perceive the slow down connected over WiFi or Ethernet?

What channel is the WiFi on?

Have you tried using WiFi spectrum analysis software such as insidder to see which channels are in use?

WiFi congestion and / or poor channel use can seriously impact wireless performance. Intrinsically your line speed tests look excellent for ADSL(1). I’m guessing that you are on a rural exchange where BT wholesale has not invested in WBC (21CN) technology, forcing users to need to upgrade to fibre or remain on 1900’s internet speeds.

@staff has the possibility of a hot backhaul been eliminated?

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.
