Broadband activation - how will we know completed?

We are expecting our broadband to be activated today but are not sure how we will know when this is done as we do not have email? The phone line is working but the little router has a red light on for the light marked "internet"? All the others are green and seem OK? Hope someone can help - my daughter is visiting us today to set it up for us and has a 240 mile trip home later so could do with getting this sorted asap.
