Guys - This is very important.
MS pushed out their biggest ever update yesterday.  We anticipate that this means an extra 30TB (30,000GB) of extra traffic being pushed to our customer base.
Things will have been slow last night and we fully expected it to be.

I agree completely and would not see the point in testing much over the next few days to a week at least, but my issue started over a week before that. I also keep an eye on what speed the router is connecting at - lately it's been 6000 to 6500 download which is 500/1000 above what i normally expect. I'm not sure i can influence that, but could that contribute to lost packets > poor connections?

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

My problems also began a few weeks ago and whilst the Microsoft updates obviously don't help I can't believe its the underlying problem in my case.

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

I was told to do the fault checker to see what was up with my slow speeds but every time i try to do the fault checker i get an error at the end so it wont send it through.

Thanks - I've placed the order and raised a ticket on your account.

hi James.
I did a quick test on my iPhone this morning and I was getting around 6000kbps and my upload has increased. I will do more testing tonight when I get home on my computers and get back to you with my speeds.
Thanks
Steve

There's nothing apparently wrong looking at the test results that you've quoted.  What sort of speed are you getting from java.com?  I suspect that it may be treated as a download site/server depending on how the traffic itself is being served.

Hi James, thanks for the reply.
I am getting as maximum of 4k/sec download from anywhere on the net at the moment. I usually use java.com and download the Java client as a test as it is always fast (>500k/sec usually) and I am getting between 2 and 4k tonight.
I am also getting a 56 hour download ETA on a 221Mb CoPilot update through itunes. Using a Remote Desktop to my work machine though my Vodafone APN link I am getting 800k/sec downloading the same file at the same time.
Cheers
Andy

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

I downloaded the latest version java (through the update option in control panel) two nights ago and it was woefully slow then. It estimated around 35mins, and it did actually take roughly that.  Huh

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

1.  Your product type
PlusNet Broadband Plus up to 8Mb
2.  Your current usage from the VMBU
Just started this month's usage, but previous month is as follows...
    13 Sep - 12 Oct    Peak usage: 1.23GB    Off-peak usage: 293.25Mb    Total usage: 1.52Gb
3.  Your IP Profile, as reported by Plusnet
Estimated line speed: Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).
Current line speed: 6500
4.  Information from the BT Speedtester
Download speed achieved during the test was - 5061 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7616 Kbps (DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps
5.  A Speedtest from an external testing site.

6.  Your gateway
You are currently connected to the "Telehouse East, Juniper 4" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as pte-ag2.
7.  Your exchange status
VP capacity at this exchange is currently showing as Green
8.  Any other information
Evening times, sites are very slow to load, even though speed tests indicate a reasonable connection of between 5Mb and 6Mb. eBay and YouTube (or any video streaming such as iPlayer) are extremely slow to load, and in particular Apple downloads are painfully slow in peak hours - I've had to abort Apple's OS X Software Update several times as it was going to take hours to download a 58Mb file (averaging about 40 to 80kb/sec). This evening seems slightly better, but still not as fast as the initial speed tests indicate they should be. Still can't download those Apple updates! Very annoying, and has been ongoing for weeks now.

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

As updating of the Plusnet exchange checker is very hit and miss (it went about 3 months with no updates - current last update was done 22nd September) I suggest for finding their exchange status people need to double check using http://www.nildram.net/support/tools/congestion_checker/

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

So are Plusnet going to actually do anything about these problems that a growing number of PAYING CUSTOMERS are experiencing.  Hell, even my upload speed is dropping now, and all Plusnet seem to do is sit there twiddling their thumbs and blaming anything else but themselves.  Meanwhile, we have to suffer not being able to use the internet connection that we're PAYING FOR!

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

...and what about all these other people experiencing the exact same problem?  Is that at my end too?
Something is drastically wrong when the speed can fluctuate from 500kbps to 5900kbps with the space of a few seconds.  All I what is to have the same connection that I was enjoying up to about a month back and not to be fobbed with any more excuses.

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

if your upload is syncing at 448kbps and your getting poor results on upload thoughput as well as download if that was my connection i would be looking at problems that can happen at user end and BTw ie exchange capicty issue.
well thats what i would do any hows  Smiley

Re: Broadband Speed Issues - 03/10/09

Wild fluctuations are a symptom of exchange congestion.
The Plusnet exchange checker is nearly a month out of date - try this one to see if it shows any problems on your exchange: http://www.nildram.net/support/tools/congestion_checker/
