Bad value for money

I've been with PN for 3 years now, and for the first 2 years or so, I saw constant speeds at peak times of 4.5 at the modem. It  suddenly dropped in May 07, so that I now see 3.3 at peak times. Over the past couple of days, this has dropped even further, so I'm now seeing 1.8 at peak times.
So over the past 8 months, my speed has dropped by 60%.
Now I'm well aware that this will not be clasiified as a fault until the speed goes below 0.5, but come on, I'm paying £15 per month for this?
I could get this speed for free!
Is there a good reason to stay?  Angry

Re: Bad value for money

Hi there,
Have you had a look at James' post on speed issues? It is a line issue rather than an account (i.e. Plusnet) issue that's slowing your connection and there are a lot of good tips that will help you to increase the speed. If there's nothing in there that makes any difference please let us know.

Re: Bad value for money

This is a common question, the problem is often  not a PN one, follow the post referenced above to find out more.
If you post here your router stats and a BT Speedtest result will give us some clue.

Re: Bad value for money

Hi 430,
Could you possibly connect to the internet for me?  I've tried having a look at your line but because you're offline, I';m not really able to get much information.
As for reasons to stay rather than moving to a free** supplier then I'd give you referrals, quality customer support and of course the Comms Team.  But it does just depend on how cost focussed your needs are.  Obviously if you refer enough customers then your connection will essentially be free, but that's a different conversation.

Not forgetting modesty  Wink
Seriously there are added benefits such as free fixed IP etc...
Like already said above, if your problem is the local loop or beyond to BT backbone then changing ISP won't make a difference unless perhaps you switch to cable; but does anyone really want NTL/Telewest known as Virgin?  Cool

Re: Bad value for money

I'd say one of the big bonuses with Plusnet is the portal, pretty much full control of your account all in one place, easy to use and straighforward.

As for staying, I'm a non-techie, so no idea if a fixed IP is good or bad, and as for a portal, I don't do anything on my account anyway - all that happens is I get hit for £15 every month.

Re: Bad value for money

Aren't those speedtest from the portal speedtester?
Thats notoriously unreliable - try the new one at www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk and see what you get.
Reading what you can from the successful ones you've managed, it looks as if your speed has improved over the times recorced - but as I say, the portal one is a bit flaky.

Re: Bad value for money

Some things for you to do, then we may have a clue:
[1] Can you tell us what it says on https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed ? It should be a number in the range 500 to 8000.
[2] Run a BT speedtest, run it 3 to 5 times and post all the results here. You need to persevere as it is busy!
[3] Type your exchange name into http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/ does it show any Red icons for your exchange?
[4] What is the make/model of your router or USB modem you use to make the ADSL connection to the internet?
