Bad certificate error

Yesterday I received an email re the new mobile SIM only service, clicked to sign up, got this error:

<<comm.plus.net uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.msgfocus.com, msgfocus.com Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN>>

Today I cannot access any of the main plusnet site (except this "community" presumably on a different server) nor can I download my email from pop.force9.net via Thunderbird.  All other sites are still accessed as normal. Only plusnet site and mail not wkg via plusnet connection. I have also tried pinging www.plus.net with no result while others give the expected return.

Note: Per Mozzilla troubleshoot ins's  have deleted cert8.db from both Firefox and Thunderbird to re-build, made no diff. Have added exception to Security settings on FFox for portal.plus.net again no difference.

EXCEPT if I use my Blackberry on "Three" as a hotspot, reconnect my laptop via the hotspot then everything is fine, both mail and site accessed as normal.

Note I receive all email on my BBerry via "Three" at least ten mins before it arrives on laptop!!!

Full error text as follows:

Oh dear I see this has been moved to the mobile section whereas it is definitely a broadband fault!

Moderator's note by Dick (Strat) Moved to Broadband board as per OPs suggestion..

Re: Bad certificate error

Update.. In desperation since I could not access the plusnet site to report a fault I emailed the old support email address. This worked to my surprise and raised a ticket. Because of the bad cert error and very slow download speed I decided to cold re-boot the modem. (via the concealed button) I then lost the card with the access code and not realising it was also the serial number, took a while to find it.

After a cold resetting, on reconnection it immediately, on its own, connected with https://www.plus.net/apps/getstarted/-Broadband setup. Or at least it tried to continually. The thing was that the modem had been used by someone else before me, it had attempted to revert to the previous owner now on the wrong phone number. Still I eventually managed to get it back under control. But got no email or site access. By using a hotspot I was eventually able to download my email by which means plusnet support had tried to contact me (after locking me out of it) They had said in their ticket, I had been barred from access to the site because of an attempted 3000 connections to the help service in less than 1 minute. It then suggested I do a factory reset of my modem/router. Well in fact I had already done that and it was the cause of the problem. They have now held the ticket until the 18/12/16.

When I have access again I may try the new SIM though reading the comments here I am dubious.
