Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

Looking at
http://usergroup.plus.net/pugit/view.php?id=203
there has been no action on this topic since last April.
Why cannot such a server be implemented?

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

It has been, you have been able to use ASMTP to send mail from non plusnet connections for sometime.
But note that it is not an officially supported service.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

I wouldn't say the job is fully done as you have to use your main account username and password rather than the same username+mailbox and it's password that you use for POP3/IMAP.
Hopefully that is something they will eventually get right.

See I don't see that as an issue.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

So if I have a domain based on my family name and set up a mailbox for my brother to use, I have to give him my main account password if his ISP won't allow outgoing mail for domains they don't host.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

So the issue there is not with plusnet, but his ISP not allowing mail for domians that they don't host!
I do understand that there are times that it would be helpful not to have to use the main account details, but given the choice of having Authenticated SMTP as it is set up now, or not at all. I know which I would pick.
If plusnet choose to go down the forced Authenticated SMTP for all users route, then I would support main box rather than account based authentication.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

... and if I found my ISP cared so little about account security I would find another ISP.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

That is good news - where are the instructions for using this feature - I searched for it yesterday and could not find any reference to it.

I don't think that you will find any reference on the plusnet support pages as its not `official`. For instructions on the use of Authenticated SMTP see the documentation for your mail client.
Use the normal relay.plus.net server, and your main account username and password.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

Thank you
If it is not an officially supported service does it mean that the service can be canceled without warning - this could be a bit unfortunate if one is traveling and the normal means of transmission has been removed.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

I suspect part of the reason for it not being official is the embarrassment of having to use the main account name and password. I think it's very unlikely to be withdrawn.

If it were to be withdrawn at short notice Webmail would remain available as a fallback.

Re: Authenticated SMTP Server fpr Plusnet Users

Since it's a "secret" service, would any notice of it's withdrawal be well publicised?
