Attainable Rate

My router consistently reports an attainable rate of around 2800 Kbps yet my download rate is usually around 1.4 Mbps. I used to be able to download at 2.0 Mbps. I'm trying to figure out why my speeds have dropped. I'm guessing it's due to my IP profile - it's reported as 1.5Mb on both the BT and plus.net websites. Is it possible my profile has become stuck? If my line is stable should I not be getting speeds closer to my reported attainable rate?

Re: Attainable Rate

Can you see your connection speed in your router pages, not just the Attainable? That determines the IP Profile, not the other way round, and for one to be stuck at 1.5Mbps would be very unusual. Can you also see your Noise Margin, possibly called SNR or SNRM?
How long is it since you power-cycled your router? Preferably with a ten-minute interval between off and on?

Re: Attainable Rate

Are you sure you've read that right?
Line tests show me that as "1810kbps"

Re: Attainable Rate

Here's my stats
SNR Margin (dB) 3.6 14.9
Attenuation (dB) 56.0 34.3
Attainable Rate (Kbps) 2736 708
Rate (Kbps) 1810 440
Router has been connected for nearly 2 days now (I changed the router 2 days ago)
What's the difference between rate and attainable rate?
Is there anything I can do to get my speeds back up to 2Mbps?

Re: Attainable Rate

OK, the 1.5Mbps IP Profile is correct for your 1,810kbps sync, as you appear to be on IPStream Connect. (Exchange not WBC/BT Wholesale ADSL2+ enabled).  Could you tell us your exchange please, to check that, as 1810kbps sync is strange unless the IPStream Connect system has changed.
The low SNR Margin suggests either you are tweaking it or there could be a lot of variable noise. Did you change the router because of earlier problems, and are you tweaking?
I'm trying to find out what has been going on in the recent past and what problems you've had, as I'm surprised you could only download at 2Mbps some time in the past. The 56dB attenuation suggests much higher than that should be possible. As though you have a long-standing poor connection that has got worse.

Re: Attainable Rate

The 440 upload, and 1810 not being an exact multiple of 32 suggests this is an ADSL2/2+ connection, so it must be WBC. But yes, the speed is a bit low for the attenuation.

Re: Attainable Rate

I'm connected to this exchange
Exchange: Kells BT Code: NIKS
I've tweaked the SNR (lowered by 2) in an attempt to get a higher sync speed. It doesn't seem to make any difference though. The line is currently stable though I've never really had a problem with stability - it's just the download speeds aren't what I'd like.

Re: Attainable Rate

You should probably start by checking out your telephone sockets and how they are connected. Do you have a modern master socket with a removable lower half? Are there any other telephone sockets, and where are they connected? The wiring for any extension sockets should be connected to the lower front part of the master socket, so that it gets disconnected when you remove that part to access the test socket.

Re: Attainable Rate

I fitted a NTE5 ADSL faceplate recently
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003H6GUNA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
It didn't really make any difference. Prior to that I was connecting a splitter directly into the master socket
There is no extension wiring

Yes, that's why I said it was strange unless the IPStream product had changed. The stats in a later post are showing ADSL2, (not 2+?), and the exchange is WBC-enabled. I was confused by the 1.5Mbps IP Profile. I didn't check 88.2% of 1810, as my subconscious said it would be higher.  But - 1,596.42.

Re: Attainable Rate

Did you change the router to see if it improved the speed?
Does it always re-sync at 1810kbps?
You say you used to get over 2Mbps. As I said before, I would expect a lot more. Have you ever had it in the 3-4Mbps range, and when did it start to degrade from over 2 to the current under 1.5?
Does anything on this page look relevant? I assume the router is not sitting on top of or very close to some other electrical/electronic equipment.

Re: Attainable Rate

Yeah I was hoping a new router would improve my speeds, but it hasnt really made any difference
I'll try resyncing again later to check what speed I get - but I'm pretty sure it's always syncing around 1800 kbps
The fastest I've ever seen was around 2.2 Mbps. I'm not sure exactly when the speed dropped (I haven't been using it a lot) but it's been like this for a good few months
The router is sitting right beside the NTE along with a phone and a homeplug adapter

Re: Attainable Rate

Can you try without the homeplug network adapters? Some brands of them have been known to generate a lot of interference which adversely affects the broadband signal.
Those ADSL stats did show interleaving was at a fairly high depth, and there were quite a lot of corrected errors, which suggests there is some sort of noise or interference affecting your broadband.
