Had an engineer out on Tuesday (4th one) and he managed to trace the fault to a junction box halfway between the house and the exchange. He couldn't see exactly what the problem was but that's the first point from the exchange that his login wasn't registering. So he switched my connection to a different bored and hey presto! He did comment that he had never seen anything like it before.
Just happy that it's all sorted and my speed has increased as a result
