Another speed drop - 21st November

Moved in to this house this September and was happy to get broadband at all - think we're 2.1 miles from the exchange though the cabling is quite new as the guy on the end had issues til last year when BT installed new cabling.
My logs:
22-11-2007 12:37:20  479.9
22-11-2007 11:59:27 480.1
22-11-2007 11:59:03 426.8
22-11-2007 11:43:18 477.9
21-11-2007 15:55:49 480.5
21-11-2007 15:55:20 497.5
20-11-2007 16:27:41 956.4
20-11-2007 16:27:09 954.5
20-11-2007 16:26:30 954.9
20-11-2007 16:25:59 938.3
24-10-2007 17:13:23 702.3
24-10-2007 17:13:00 700.6
24-10-2007 17:12:36 714.4
27-09-2007 13:48:33 702.3
27-09-2007 13:48:10 678
25-09-2007 09:17:24 717
Something happened on the 20/21st November. No change this end in equipment, had the same router for about 2 years. All cabled up, no trojans - swept the PCs for viruses/trojans etc.
My router is saying:  448 Kbps Upstream, 1152 Kbps Downstream - I think the Downstream had jumped to around the 1450 mark with the initial jump in the speed tests on the 20th November, but I can't remember. Any clues?

Hi Kopperdrake,
If you see my other reply to your other post, I have suggested that you reboot your router as I feel that this should result in your seeing improved speeds.

Wow - that was quick! I'll give it a go - just ran the speedtester.bt.com and got 474kbps from that, was going to watch that video you mentioned too but I'll give the rebooting a go first Smiley

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Jameseh - it's done it again, back down to my router stating 448 up and 1152 down but even worse is the actual download speed, worse than before at around 340kbps Sad I've soft rebooted it, hard rebooted it but nothing budges it from that setting. Could BT have decided that that's all their going to give me? This started to happen last week. Any ideas?

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Hi there,
you should be back upto 1000Kbps now, so if you give your router a reboot, speeds should be back up.

Hi Jameseh,
Yup, thanks, it's back up  Smiley What's happening with it, is it something I can stop happening?

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Not really!
It was just a little sync blip, which does happen with Max every so often.
You can always try changing filters and ensuring that you're connected to your master socket via a filter, there isn't really that much else you can do.

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Hi Jameseh, or anyone else out there who can help - speed's just gone back down to 400kbps, any chance you can wave your magic wands and push it back up to 1,000kbps?
Much appreciated!
And hope you had a Merry Christmas Cheesy

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Hi Kopperdrake,
Your profile is currently set to 750Kbps in line with your synchronisation speed.  I've treated things slightly at this end, so if you reboot your router, you should notice a slight improvement.

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Thanks for that - back to 650kbps-ish. Does that mean BT have downgraded my connection setting? The router states I have a 1152 d/l setting, is this wrong or something different? I followed your recommendations from before regarding the filter in place (in fact, the house is already wired for ADSL so has them built into the walls).
Sometime this year we'll be swapping our plus.net account to another number in the house (and therefore line) so maybe that will be better - it's a bit newer than the current one but it has no built-in filter so maybe I can experiment with the filters then.

Re: Another speed drop - 21st November

Hi there,
If you hold onto that sync speed, then you should go back onto the 1Mbps profile.  You'll have had a recent blip, causing the sync speed to drop hence the change in profile.
