An important change to Moderator recruitment

Appointment of future Moderators
From time to time, the Plusnet Community Forum Moderators may look to add an additional moderator or two to their time to help assist with the moderation and smooth running of the Plusnet Community Site Forums.
Previously, this has been run in a couple of different scenarios.  In days gone by, the moderators would approach those who they felt would make a good addition to the team.  This has considerable benefits as the moderators are used (hopefully!) to looking after the forums and will be able to effectively gauge what would make a good moderator.
More recently though, we’ve used elections, relying on votes from the Community.  The moderators would ask for candidates to step forwards and then there would be a voting period.  Whilst it’s always nice to feel that the moderators are being chosen by the Community, we do feel that this can often turn into a popularity contest, or someone is being chosen for the technical help they have offered in the past.  Unfortunately this can sometimes lead to not necessarily the best candidate being elected.
To ensure that we continue to provide a high standard of moderation, we shall be reverting to approaching those who we feel would make a good moderator.  You can also of course contact one of the moderators should you feel that you would make a good addition to the team and we’ll then carefully consider your application.
Right now, we are looking for more moderators so if you think you may be interested, please contact one of the existing moderators to let us know!
With regards,
Barry Zubel
on behalf of The Plusnet Community Forum Moderation Team

I feel it's a good change too... it seemed to work pretty well back in the old days.

Ditto - its the best way and always has been.
Without naming names, the election 'process' has seen us end up with a number of people as moderators who should never have been considered.

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

That really depends if the mods are voting on new mods or an individual is recruiting another individual without consultation.

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

If the process is anything like it was when I was a mod, the mods will fully consult with each other before doing anything. Indeed, I'm pretty certain I recall cases where we wouldn't action something until each and every mod had agreed.

Re: An important change to Moderator recruitment

That's correct - we won't be bringing on new mods unless there is a general consensus across the existing moderators.
