After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

My ADSL line was damaged and down for 2.5 weeks, it’s now up again but the whole line is in poor condition. My neighbours was working for 48 hours and is broken again.

Can I ask for a line reset to see if I can get a better speed?

Current download speed is: 7.43Mbps / .85Mbps

SNR: 6.1 / 14.8

LA:  24.3 / 37.8

On my router the current rate is 1152 / 8826

@davebd With that D/L SNR and line attenuation, I doubt a reset would achieve anything. I would also suggest that the SNR indicates you sill have an issue.

If you saw the pole behind my property you’d agree! Its leaning at 15 degrees and open reach aren’t interested.

A pole leaning like that could be regarded as unsafe - have you reported it, and if so, what was the response?

As regards your actual connection speed, though, is ADSL the fastest option you have?

Re: After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

Openreach had to use scaffolding to repair the line as the leaning pole was too dangerous to use a ladder in their opinion. I asked if they were going to fix the pole (and my neighbour’s which also is loose), it was to be reported but no timescale on that.

I am quite close to my green cabinet which has fibre installed and my village is scheduled for FTTP but no date.

I am in contract with my ADSL and want to switch to Vodafone next year as my single mobile mast is unreliable and I need a back up landline as I am disabled.

Re: After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

OpenReach and timescales I can understand, although leaning poles put stress on the cables which could cause even more damage and work if they snap, so hopefully the wait for rectification work should not be too long.

If you have an FTTC option - for how long? - why are you still on ADSL?

Switching to Vodafone  will will still mean the pole will be required, and you will need to move to a VoIP 'landline' supplier - unless Voda offer an 'all-in-one' package.

@davebd

Hiding personal details can you post a screen image of the results from

https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

This will tell us what you can / should receive.

As an aside, are you reigistered with PN as a "vulnerable" person. If not, you can do so through your members portal.

Re: After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

Yes the pole is damaging my neighbour's line and their pole which also had to be fixed. A tree is down on top of the other neighbour which they also had to fix but left the wire still under the falling tree which 24 hours later broke again(😄), when revisited the engineer said he would report the waste of time and resources the previous team. The falling tree has caused my pole to be falling over.

So stuck with poor work and no interest in sorting properly. The 21st century?

Hi Brian, I’m already on the list for support with Plusnet, but thanks for the info. I’ve taken a screen shot from the link you sent.

@davebd according to that table, you can get nine times (or more) better speed by switching to a SoGEA product. It will mean either finding a supplier who offer what most of them call 'digital voice' (AKA VoIP) in the package, or finding a true VoIP provider, if a 'landline' is still required, though.

Re: After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

@davebd

Thanks for the information.

As already stated by @jab1 you can receive much better speeds (between 80 and 73 down).

If you are on ADSL then you would need to move to a SOGEA connection with PN at the cost of your landline or move to an ISP that does both internet and phone although the phone service would be some form of VOIP.

I wonder how much the leaning pole is disrupting your internet signal?

As to VOIP you should have a look around to see what services are available, either through an ISP that does both (the easy option) or an independant VOIP provider.

Note that VOIP does not work during power cuts so you would probably need some sort of back up power unit.

Or move to an ISP who give you an internet service at a price/speed you want, and move your 'landline service to a true VoIP Provider.

Re: After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

@davebd

When does your PN contract end?

Sooner of later you are going to have to move to some form of VOIP and as ADSL will not be available you will need to move to SOGEA (FTTC with no phone line).

Now, I though PN would pull the plug this year (less said about that the better!!!) but it will happen next year. When you get notification (if still with them) they will try and move you to EE - you don't have to go.

OpenReach have just announced a major incentive to get ISP's to move customes off copper products - cost increases. See https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2025/11/openreach-raises-prices-on-copper-lines-to-boost-uk-fi...

As PN are withdrawing from providing phone services I don't see them continuing as things are when their costs are going to rise significantly.

Are these figures consistent in their DS / US presentation? Assuming DS / US

  • DS line attenuation is going to deliver 7.1mbps on ADLS or 18.1mbps on ADSL2+
  • The US figures 850kbps would seem reasonable for an ADSL circuit

There are though two references to "current rate" are markedly different - the latter also looking as though the number have been swapped to US / DS and might actually be MAX RATE not current rate.

Either there is a residual fault on the line or the service has the wrong provision (ADSL not ADSL2).

Is the line noisy?  Is there a dial tone?

Re: After a line repair(2.5 weeks down) can i ask for a line reset?

I have now connected my modem router to the back plate of my BT socket using a new filter. I waited an hour to allow the DLM not to think any errors etc were to blame (15 minute cycle time). See attached even worse figures
