Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

My connection is now past the 10 day training period.  Here are my stats :-
Uptime: 5 days, 15:05:47
DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 888 / 3,088
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 440 / 2,776
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]: 135.55 / 1.69
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 18.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 30.5 / 50.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 21.0 / 9.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 131,074 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 131,112 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 84 / 1,246,688
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 631
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / NA
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1257 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1200-4000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2776 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 440 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2448 Kbps
Postcode:
BS4 4RH
Phone exchange:
SOUTH
Estimated line speed:
3.0Mb (This may vary between 2Mb and 6Mb) - Checked on 2011-06-14 18:52:20
Current line speed:
1.5 Mb
Now...there are 2 issues here - 1) My IP profile doesn't match my PN line speed, and 2) Kitz reports that my attenuation should allow an ADSL2+ IP profile of 4500kbps.  My exchange is 21CN enabled, so should I go for it?

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

Obviously Current Line Speed needs correcting
It would appear that your default noise margin has been increased to 9dB (or perhaps 12dB given the time of the last sync and the fact that it is now late evening.) which explains the low speed.
Two things
Can you check your stats when connected to the test socket (do it during daylight hours)
Given the speed and noise margin you may be better on ADSL1
These are my stats on ADSL1
Downstream
Noise Margin:    4.8  dB
Connection Rate:  4800  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 51.0  dB
Upstream
Noise Margin:    23.0  dB
Connection Rate:  448  Kbps
Line Attenuation: 25.0  dB
Finally it would appear that your upstream attenuation is a bit high
If you try the quiet line test - dial 17070 option 2 is there any noise

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

This IS when attached to the test socket, but I take your point about posting daylight hours stats
I can't easily try a quiet line test, as I don't own a handset.  However, I'll try to borrow one for a day or two.
Hopefully Jojo (or another PN person) will be able to increase my line speed tomorrow Smiley

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

DSL Type:  G.992.3 annex A
This means you are actually on ADSL2 so the router/exchange has already determined that ADSL2+ is not good for your connection.
G.992.1 = ADSL1
G.992.3 = ADSL2
G.992.5 = ADSL2+
You are also on a fairly long line, so at best (with a 6dB SNR) you are unlikely to get above 4000 sync rate / 3500 profile.

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

Hi there,
I've upped the PN profile to 2000 to match that set on BTs side but that's with an SNR of 9dB, so if that dropped to 6dB I'd be surprised if that got you more than a raise to 2500 I'm afraid. If you've already plugged it into the test socket then I'm not sure what else we can do to get it any higher as things stand.

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

Hi kosymodo
I see that you have one of these non-rounded IP profiles at 2448. Your profile is now 2500. What results are you getting from the BT speed tester at the moment?

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

Hi Jojo
I'll try running another speedtest when I get home from work.  I wasn't around much over the weekend, and when I was, the speedtester said it was unable to test my connection (on multiple occasions).
Thanks for your help Smiley

No worries, give me a nudge when you've done it and I can see where we can take it from there. Smiley

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

Hi kosymodo,
Your profile is set right currently, but looking at your SNR, it may be possible to get a bit more out of it. Are you currently using the test socket?

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

Hi Jojo
Yes I'm using the test socket.
Well, I say that, but in actual fact I'm not.  I'm using the faceplate, but there is no other internal wiring whatsoever.  Therefore I'm guessing there's no difference at all in me using the test socket or the faceplate.  However, if you (or anyone else) begs to differ, then I'd be quite happy to connect to the test socket.
Thanks Smiley

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

HI kosymodo,
I do beg to differ, lol. I have seen a massive difference from faceplate to test socket on many occasions, regardless of internal wiring. Give it a go and lets see.

Re: Advice needed re ADSL vs ADSL2+

HI kosymodo,
So it did make a difference. I've moved the profile up to 3000 at our end to allow you to get the most from the connection.
