Advanced router?

i have a dozen users in my household using my internet connection including my young nieces and nephews. What I would like to do is replace my Plusnet router with something more advanced that can log and limit access to certain users. I have created a list of the main requirements below, from reading them could someone recommend a suitable router that can meet these requirements? (Or at least as best as possible)
1. Logging of IPs, URL’s and Ports inbound and outbound from each connected user on the network.
2. Advanced firewall management: multiple firewall profiles dependant on time, bandwidth or destination (either URL or IP)
3. User management: This should be interwined with firewalls where different profiles can be assigned to different users (Look at Draytek user management solution)

As far as logging and limiting access goes might be worth taking a look at pfSense and Squid/SquidGuard - tutorial here - http://ufb.mtaspiring.school.nz/Downhome/Filtering ; Smiley

Can this be installed on the Thomson router provided by Plusnet? I dont want to really rely an additional machine to do all the filtering. Hence why I was hoping I could get a router which has it all built in.

Re: Advanced router?

pfSense is an open source firewall/router based on FreeBSD, so it'll typically run on anything that'll accept FreeBSD - don't think that includes Plusnet routers. If you were using pfSense you would replace your Plusnet router with a pfSense box(typically a low cost fanless(completely silent) PC with dual Ethernet ports - one for WAN the other for LAN->connected to a switch).
I'm not a pfSense expert, just a casual user, so if you want a detailed reply you might try asking over at the pfSense forums - https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php
