I think that the problem was caused, initially, with the router being switched on and off quite often during the early hours and days of getting broadband to the property. This appeared like an unstable connection and, consequently, resulted in BT classifying the connection in the lowest band. This delivers data at the slowest rate to ensure that data is not corrupted en route. I am a little surprised that this banding isn't a rolling assessment so that it can self correct in situations like this. However, I am deeply grateful to this site for its wealth of information and help from all those that contribute.
