ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

I use an OpenReach modem with an ASUS RT-N66U router for my fibre optic 80/20 Plusnet broadband (using a static IP). A number of devices share this connection, including 2 PCs, and 2 smartphones. I am happy with my ASUS RT-N66U router’s performance; however, there is a problem that I would like to get sorted. If I get a power cut, or if I power off and on the router, I have to wait much longer than I would like for the router to find a WAN connection.
As a test, I powered the router off, then back on again, visited my router page of http://192.168.1.1 and sat watching the Internet Status section of the Network Map. With a stopwatch going in the background, I would time how long it takes for the ‘Internet Status’ to change from disconnected to connected. I did this 4 times (with one time also rebooting the modem as well). I discovered that I am waiting between 5 – 7 minutes for a WAN connection to be established. I also changed modem from the Huawei HG612 to the ECI Telecom B-FOCuS V-2FUb (Rev B) and did a modem reset, but this has not helped.
This is an expensive router and I don’t find this acceptable. I have the Technicolour router that Plusnet gave me and when there is loss of power from the router, modem (or both), I only have to wait about 2 minutes to have a WAN connection established. I have contacted other RT-N66U users (including one who uses PPPoE) and this is not typical of the router. I took my N66U to my mothers home (who uses Virgin Media 10mb Cable). This doesn't require a PPPoE connection, and the router set itself up as "Automatic IP" and I was able to connect and have a WAN connection to the Virgin Media modem in about a minute. I tested this by powering off/on the N66U router 5 times via ethernet cable and twice via wireless. Within about a minute, I was able to have a WAN connection established everytime.
I have saved 2 log files that my ASUS router has produced (each log uses a different firmware). I have provided links below. I believe this is an ISP problem because the router gets into a loop for several minutes saying "Timeout waiting for PADO packets"
and "Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery". Please could someone help?

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

Hi,
I use a RT-N66U which I recently purchased and it works fine with a Plusnet Fibre Extra connection.
My Asus is using firmware version 3.0.0.4.246.
I would agree that seeing timeouts during PPPoE Discovery waiting for the PADO offer from PlusNets server looks a little strange.
Hopefully PlusNet staff can help you when they check this next week, if I can be of any use to yourself or PN staff feel free to ask any questions because mine does not suffer from this long delay during connection.

My successful log:
Jan  1 00:00:20 pppd[1736]: Plugin rp-pppoe.so loaded.
Jan  1 00:00:20 pppd[1736]: RP-PPPoE plugin version 3.10 compiled against pppd 2.4.5

(This is only an extract of my log, however you will see it connects fine).

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

I'm hoping a Plusnet staff member could check out my log for me. I understand I am using a different router to what they provided me but the log indicates it's something at the ISP's end, or at least that's how I see it.

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

@chrispurvey,
Thanks for your reply, I am hoping you can remain on this post and help me out. What you have posted is unfortunately not helpful. The disconnections is me trying to get this router problem sorted. I have provided 2 txt files with log files that my ASUS router generated. I would like a Plusnet staff member to open my ASUS generated log files (the txt files I posted above) to see why the router takes so long to establish a WAN connection.
Here is the part of the log file that I think explains why the router takes so long:

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

I'm disappointed no one can read my log and tell me why it's doing this. I posted the log originally as a log and then after, quoted the part of the log where I see a problem. Please can no Plusnet staff member help me out?

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

Looking at your screenshot your firmware is version 1.0.0.4 whereas riley has version 3.0.0.4.246 and doesn't see the same issues... any chance you could update your router's firmware to the same one as riley has and see if the session establishes more quickly then?

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

Hello,
Thanks for your reply Matt. I am disappointed you didn't read my original post fully as I mentioned there that I have updated the firmware and the firmware versions are in the filenames of the two .txt files. I am also disappointed you didn't look at the screenshot carefully as it says there version 3.0.0.4.220 and not 1.0.0.4 as you stated.
Someone on the ASUS forum said this:
Quote
Jan  1 01:01:39 pppd[498]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Jan  1 01:01:39 pppd[498]: Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery
Those lines mean your router sends a request to your ISP asking to return the list of PPPoE service points, and your ISP didn't return anything back to the request.  This is usually associated with what I was describing (trying to start a second session while previous one hasn't expired yet).  Your router tries again about once per minute, until the ISP finally returns the list of available access points, at which point your router sends the login request to the access point, and your PPPoE session gets established.

Does this mean anything to Plusnet?

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

Did you get anywhere with this?  Just wondering as I've got this bad boy for my new FTTC connection and haven't had the issues you're experiencing.  Hope they've resolved themselves, or something was pinpointed to what the cause was.

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

Hi,
Just procured a RT-N66U.  I'm running a Tomato firmware and also have problems for the first few minutes after the pppd daemon is restarted:
I see the following in the logs:
Jan 12 14:33:11 Black-Knight daemon.err pppd[17931]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
My connection has always been very reliable.  Once of the reasons behind the RT-N66U was to try and impair my Xbox as the recent call of duty's punish me for having a good connection.  The Tomato firmware allows you to assign a particular device specific bandwidth.  So I have given my Xbox 170kbs and it plays a lot better....
There are newer versions of the Tomato firmware than I am running but there have been a few reported problems so I'm using 101-AIO-K64 which is supposed to be very reliable..
I'm continuing to investigate.

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

I have a program which can be run on OpenWRT which will fix this issue (you'd need to compile yourself though) - probably no good if you are running the stock firmware.  See here:

Re: ASUS RT-N66U - No WAN For First 5 - 7 Minutes

@jimbof
Thanks for the information.  I ended up going back to the Merlin firmware in the end which doesn't exhibit the same connection issue.
