ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

I have been on ADSL2+ for aprox 2 weeks and current synch speed is,
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 446 / 8,389 . This is faster than I ever got before, but not by much. Plusnet shows my current line speed as 6500 (BT checker will not work for me, some kind of java problem) I used to get 6000 or 6500 on ADSL2. I expected more or am I being impatient? Also could anyone inform me how to find my noise margin on the Thompson router, provided by plusnet.

You mean ADSLmax presumably?
In that band ADSL2+ speeds would typically almost double. Chances are you have a problem with your OWN extension wiring.
Without detailed stats though no-one could say, not just the noise margin but attenuation power etc.

You could try here - if your router is one of those listed.

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

Roughly a year ago I sorted my internal wiring out, I am an ex BT engineer so am at least half competent. Surely the fact that I can get up to 6500 on ADSL+ should mean some speed increase  on ADSL2+. If there was a intenal  wiring fault surely I could not have maintained 5500+ for the past year

Ok, here's some stats,
Downstream Link Info
Loop Loss SNR Margin Errored Seconds Hec Errors Cell Count Speed
      41         3.4                           0           N/A   27281   8388

Current Line Rate
  6500
So, really, that's not far from the mark for your line length.

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

@alben - I only got a marginal speed increase by moving to ADSL2+ and that's all I'd expect based on line distance/attenuation.
Your figures look similar - using 192.168.1.254 follow Broadband Connection/DSL Connection/View More/Details and you'll get all your stats

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

Indeed, and if you got more than 5500 on ADSLmax it would have been unusual.
A somewhat (not much) shorter line and you'd possibly see a big increase but you're just a bit too far from the exchange to gain very much from ADSL2+.

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

I'm intrigued by this question as I've also just been upgraded to 21CN & ADSL2 and similarly not found any significant difference with my line speed, it being currently the lowest it's been since I got beyound ADSLmax. I've been with Plusnet since 2003 and have seen many changes of technology and subsequent line speeds and prior to retirement I worked as a BBC engineer and have a reasonable grasp of broadband technology.
I'm currently concerned that a year ago I was getting my Plusnet BB via 20CN & Tiscali LLU equipment and I achieved approx 5600kbps download and 668kbps upload speed after some trial profile adjustments by a very kind fellow in Plusnet's support side. When some months back my BB was rerouted via BT gear at my exchange the line speeds went down to approx 4800kbps / 448kbps. When I queried this I was told that BT used a more conservative line speed auto-negotiation on their equipment. Since upgrading to 21CN & ADSL2+ last week my current modem (Thompson TG575 v7) is today showing:-
DSL Type: G.992.3 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 443 / 4,283
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 0.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.5 / 39.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.0 / 9.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN
I know my Line attentuation implies that I probably won't get a lot better I'm still puzzled as to how my line is now seemingly not able to support anywhere near what I got via the Tiscali LLU equipment.

Huh Why?
It should be capable of double that - around 9mbps.

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

Hi shorty,
I'm with HPsauce on this one I think you should definitely be getting better performance. It looks a bit intermittent, see logs below. I would refer you to our troubleshooting guide in the first instance and then raise a fault if none of that helps.

I have  the same issue,  I came from tiscali llu my speeds have dropped from what I used to get with them.
I have queried  but never really got an answer

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

Regarding Joanne Pilson's reply......
I don't understand quite what the log is intended to show me. My Thompson modem has been permanently powered and sync'd up since 13th Sept until this morning when I temporarily tried my Netgear DG834GT modem with no difference in line speed apparent. BT were supposed to have sorted out an exchange problem on the 13th which according to Plusnet involved a "lift & shift". They had originally tried to upgrade me the previous week and left me initially without any ATM connection on the 10th Sept. Fortunately this was sorted out on the 11th Sept.
My memory might be playing tricks on me (a senior moment I suppose) but I'm convinced that yesterday my Gateway was "pcl-ag05" but I note that today it's "pcl-ag02". I'm fairly sure that I used to be on"pcl-ag01". I also note that my account shows that "My Current Line Speed" is 21000(?).
I'm confused to say the least! but I'll have a look through the Troubleshooting Guide later although nothing BB-wise in my house has changed for the last 2 years apart from the Thompson modem that I received from Plusnet 10 days ago after they suggested when I asked to be upgraded that there could be a compatibilty problem with my Netgear one. To save confusing the situation I'm intending to stay with the Thompson one for now.

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

Thanks for all the advise so far, thanks nadger for showing me how to get router stats. Here are some I have just taken and what puzzles me is the downstream attenuation I am sure when I was on ADSL max  my  Belkin router showed this to be 26. Also how does the noise margin work ADSL2+, a good stable connection for me on  max was 9db downstream ?
Alan.

Re: ADSL2+ not much of a speed increase so far.

Hi shorty (i'm using your username as there are 2 Alan's)
You may see your router as not losing any connection but the logs I posted means it has re-authenticated and when it does that it can also authenticate on to a different gateway. So for some reason your connection is dropping so we need to try to find out why. When your connection drops like that your speed will drop too as the system tries to stabilise your line. Once we get to the bottom of the dropping connection we will see the speed increase. Your connection speed just hadn't updated on your account but it now matches your BT profile.
