ADSL struggling with initial connection to YouTube and eBay (specifically)

Almost every time I try to connect to YouTube or eBay, and occasionally Google and reddit, I get a loooong wait of 20 to 240 seconds to before it connects. Once it's connected the first time, it's absolutely fine - for a while. Only these sites, and I think on every device/browser (though I will check).
I realise there is a place for traffic shaping etc. but this is getting a bit silly.  Is this something that can be solved, or is it a new feature of Plusnet's ADSL service?

Re: ADSL struggling with initial connection to YouTube and eBay (specifically)

Hi there,
I can't imagine why our network might cause problems specifically just with those sites.
Definitely do try other devices and browsers if you haven't already please and let us know the results of a trace route to the sites you've mentioned too please.

Thanks Adam. Here's a traceroute:

I don't know much about these things, but after that the My eBay site works fine in my browser, but traceroute still does the above.  Same story for YouTube.

The traceroute to Ebay is fine as some destinations won't respond to a ping request.
Do you have any other devices you can test?

Can you check whether it's on one of these sometimes troublesome 146 addresses?

It's an 87 address not 146.
I'll fire up my old desktop PC and check from there.

Re: ADSL struggling with initial connection to YouTube and eBay (specifically)

Same problems on every device/machine/browser, and getting worse.
The only thing I've found that helps sometimes is if I search for the video, then click the link, it works and also 'kicks' any of the other YouTube tabs into loading. Almost like getting referred to YouTube from Google is OK, but going direct to YouTube isn't. Note that the www.youtube.com tab had already been open for about 30 secs when I started recording:

I know this situation sounds mental but it's now beginning to drive me up the wall.
I've seen the same issues now with YouTube, reddit, Google (but not Bing!), eBay, and Windows Update on my desktop PC. Meanwhile, I can download other stuff fine (e.g. GBs of data from Steam, or streaming HD video from Amazon).

Which router are you using?

Re: ADSL struggling with initial connection to YouTube and eBay (specifically)

My top-of-the-line Technicolor TG582n, although I have WiFi turned off and a TP-Link wireless AP running out of it. (So I have as short as possible a distance between the BT box and my Technicolor router, then the TP-Link box runs on a huge ethernet/PoE cable into the middle of the flat).
I'm guessing I should try it for a while just using the Technicolor's WiFi and removing the TP Link thing to eliminate that as the culprit....

Re: ADSL struggling with initial connection to YouTube and eBay (specifically)

Just a quick update - I replaced my Technicolor TG582n with a shiny new TP-Link one, and the problems seem to have stopped (still connecting through the secondary wireless AP box). So either the Technicolor was at fault, or something else that has resolved itself.  Crazy
