ADSL connection keeps dropping

Hi, stats as below, connection is dropping every few minutes. I've tried connecting directly into the master socket and using different routers and filters, no luck. Any help much appreciated. Cheers!
Down:
SNR 0
Attenuation 43db
11705 Kbps
Up:
SNR 6
Attenuation 25
1106 kbps
19 REPLIES 19

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

If those stats are correct you have a very low downstream SNR, which will result in frequent drops.
Which routers have you tried?
Are there any extensions wired in to the master socket?
Has anyone seen my signature, it's gone missing.

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

Thanks for the reply. They're a sitecom x4 and a dynamode r-adsl-c4w-eg. There are other sockets but I don't know if they're connected.

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

Have you tried the test socket behind#d the faceplate of the master socket?  After you plug your router into the test socket take a wired phone and plug it into each extension socket in turn and make sure these have been disconnected so you do not get a dial tone.
It's odd that your fault is not self-correcting.  When you disconnect a router I would expect the SNR to go up to a more reasonable value when you reconnect.

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

Unfortunately it's a really old socket with no test port. It looks like none of the extensions are connected any more.
On the other hand, we've just got back from a weekend away and the router is showing the downstream SNR margin as 4db with the connection up for over a day. Thanks for the help anyway!

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

What Downstream connection speed have you got now? That 11705 kbps is very high for a 43dB line, I'm not surprised the SNR was around 0!
4db certainly sounds a bit better, but the current stats will give a better idea. Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

That looks a bit healthier. Can you post another sets from daylight hours tomorrow. I hope the connection hasn't dropped.
Now, can you clarify what hard-wired sockets you have? I deduce that your incoming BT cable goes to one old style socket (master socket) but because you said "I've tried connecting directly into the master socket" this suggests you have at least one other, but then you said "It looks like none of the extensions are connected any more"
Can you explain how you are normally connected and what you have plugged in? Are you using any extension leads?
I guess your Master Socket may look like the middle picture, and do your Microfilters that look like this ?

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

Hi there,
Looks like things are much more stable now:

Hope things keep up that way, especially if you're still getting the same speeds with the same downstream SNR Smiley

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

Blimey! Has BT been doing any work in the area (or at the exchange)?
Stats from daylight hours and late this evening as well would still be good to see.

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

BT haven't reported any outages in the area but I think we're safe to say that what ever caused the issues seems to have stopped now.

From late last night:
Down:
SNR margin 3.3 db
Attenuation 43 db
10391 Kbps
Up:
SNR margin 5.7 db
Attenuation 25 db
1117 kbps
From 8am today:
Down:
SNR margin 4.0 db
Attenuation 43 db
10391 Kbps
Up:
SNR margin 5.8 db
Attenuation 25 db
1117 kbps
The only connected socket is the master, which is indeed like the LJU one in your first link. I have a 10m extension cable which connects to a microfilter like in your second link.

Yeah, no more disconnections in the last couple of days. It'd be nice to know what caused/fixed it, but I'll settle for it just working again!
Cheers All!

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

What type of extension cable is this? And what is it connected to - ie. is it plugged into the master socket with the filter at the far end with phone and router plugged in there, or is the filter plugged into the master and the extension cable used for phone only?

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

It's a "10M UK Telephone Phone Fax Modem Extension Cable Lead B" - £2 from ebay, no special shielding or anything, plugged into the master socket, with the microfilter at the non-socket end. IIRC there was a ~3 db drop in downstream attenuation when i bypassed the extension cable and plugged the microfilter directly into the master socket but everything else was pretty much the same.

Re: ADSL connection keeps dropping

Where possible the router should be as close to the master socket as possible.  It certainly seemed to help me.
