ADSL Speed Discrepancy

Hi,

I received an 'About Your Broadband Speed' email from Plusnet Support today advising a current line speed of 21Mbps. However, I am getting nowhere near this throughput (router connected directly to master socket, single device connected directly to router)...

BTW Performance Test gives the below:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 4.97 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5.86 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5 Mbps

Router Stats:

7 - Data rate: 448/5856
8 - Maximum data rate: 1140/5892
9 - Noise margin: 22.0/5.3
10 - Line attenuation: 27.0/45.5

Current Line Speed on PlusNet Member Centre showing as 21Mbps vs Estimated Line Speed of 2.5Mbps.

Can you please advise if the 21Mbps quoted by PlusNet is an error, or if I should realistically be achieving better throughput?

Many thanks,

Ross

Re: ADSL Speed Discrepancy

Put your downstream attenuation into this calculator and you'll see that the 21mbps is way out.

Re: ADSL Speed Discrepancy

I'd say a BT profile of 5MB is about right with an Attenuation of 45.5 (See Kitz for for information).

The current line speed needs updating. I'm sure a member of staff will be along soon to sort that out for you.

Re: ADSL Speed Discrepancy

Thanks guys for the (very!) speedy response...

Yeah, I assumed the 21Mbps must be an anomaly on PlusNet's part as 5Mbps is closer to what I got previously with BT and I assume the underlying infrastructure is exactly the same. I'll go back to dreaming about double figure Mbps 😕

Cheers,

Ross
