Re: 85million FEC errors

Servivce is UP TO ..... 8mbs.... Your particular service speed is governed by the distance you are from the exchange, and to a point, the SNR  on that line... If the line is noisy as a telephone line, then you may experience drops in synch speed, and should report it as a VOICE fault to PlusNet.
I am about 4 Km from my exchange and I am getting between 1.2 AND1.4 meg speed... My Download attenuation is 63.5db and my current SNR is 4.8 varying between 6.5 and 3.5 during a 24 hour period..... I don`t worry about the FEC figures... My line is supposed to support 2 megs maximum.... my current synch speed is 1952kbps... it has been up to 2016 kbps but my speed has never been above 1.6megs

voice is ok. sounds like you are in the same boat. STuffed until a cable provider moves nearby.

Yup!>. The house is wired cabled  for Virgin, but I don`t intend going that way !... I`m happy with a nice stable connection.... speed is not an issue with me, as I don`t do gaming.... !  just email and normal surfing, with some youtubes ....  Smiley

But, but, but...
If those '.' are meant to be ',', then you're running at 3200 FEC errors per second.
I'm not convinced it would be working at all with that kind of rate!

That's 163 per second, which sounds quite a lot - but of course FEC errors are the ones that are correctable.
How does the CRC figure look?

Re: 85million FEC errors

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 46 / 85,396,019

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 46 / 1,669

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 38 / 1,209
that number of errors suggests something amiss, but i cant say i see any problem browsing

Re: 85million FEC errors

That CRC level is about 10/hour, which seems to be perfectly manageable - you're not likely to see much of an issue when you are browsing or downloading.
I recently went to non-interleaved, but on a rather better line. I went from 30 FEC per hour (and almost no CRC) to roughly 30 CRC per hour. My errors are very sparse, so each error that was correctable with FEC became a full CRC error without.
If your errors are spread out a lot, then the 85 million FEC errors could become 85 million CRC errors; if the errors occur in dense bursts, then this could reduce to, at best, 1.25 million CRC errors.
Over the 6 days, that would be a theoretical range of between 2 and 164 CRC per second.
However, the way the data is carried on the line means that 60 CRC errors per second is 100% failure, so you can't get higher than that. At the very best, you will be guaranteeing yourself (2/60) errors, or 3.3%, but probably rather higher.
In this case, I'd say the the FEC correction is doing its job extremely well. I would only turn it off if I was in a very experimental mood, and willing to accept that it might make the line unusable for at least a day, and then have a knock-on effect on the IP profile even after it was turned back on again.
And, unfortunately, turning interleaving off also turns off FEC.

Re: 85million FEC errors

i expect i will leave things as is. Copper cable means winners and losers dependent on line length.
i can live with it until fibre arrives or i move house.
thanks for all the feedback.
