Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

Hi Kevin,
PPP drops shouldn't cause any adverse affects to DLM, they don't that much on ADSL to be honest. We see them as PPP drops but most drops due to a fault are caused by the line erroring, making the line unstable and causing a retrain, which causes the PPP session to drop.
My advice is always to try and keep the PPP session active for as long as possible, however, I understand this isn't always possible, especially in situations such as these. The problem with ADSL is that the Router carries sync and PPP sessions so it's a little more tricky trying to get the point across to drop the PPP session as opposed to just switching the router off.

Thanks Chris,
Urban myth then... So (when you have time) why has there been so much / frequent advice to do manual session drops?

Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

@Townman
My belief is that it's an urban myth.
One thing that annoys me is Plusnet's reliance on the visual radius graph. Gateway hopping looks like a line drop on the graph and a brief loss of sync which does not lose PPP doesn't show. We've had a case very recently where Plusnet said the line was stable but sync was dropping very frequently.

Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

Doing a disconnect via the router interface (or just rebooting the router if on FTTC) only drops the PPP - it does not drop sync. That's why that is correct way to do it.

Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

To be honest Jelv, I use the Visual Radius graph, more of a quick glance and I depend on the BTw RADUS and DLM History which registers retrains and re-syncs.
It's not something that everyone in the relevant departments do unfortunately, but I'm looking at ways we can make that possible. It's not as easy as giving people to right tools, they need to know how to use them and need to know what they are looking for.

Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

Ok just had the engineer out ( thanks for that ) , he found two faults the box outside where the line connects to the house and the bt modem . He left at 12.30 p.m but my speeds have not increased yet , if I remember right from the last engineers visit he should have contacted you to get the speed increased is this right ? If so could you do that for me please ?

Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

Hi skydemon,
I think there's a problem with your line. It looks as though there's a jointing issue on the copper part of the network. Could you raise a fault at http://faults.plus.net so we can get that sorted out for you?

Re: 20 mb/s speed drop

It could be a relatively new fault on the network. We'll get your ticket picked up ASAP though and we'll get that sorted out for you.
