1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

I have been very happy with my plusnet extra up until the last couple of weeks.  Up until I was getting 6-8mbps throughout the day except when it was raining - it would go down to 4-5mbps.  But lately I have been getting alot of disconnects - sometimes up to 10 per hour but sometimes hardly at all, which is very annoying and currently my speed using speedtest.net is less than 1mbit .  No other network activity when i did the speedtest.
The odd thing is that for very brief periods my speed goes way high to 10-12mbits?
Is there a problem in my area at the moment or is my router on the way out or what?  Is there anything I can do?
Any help would be very appreciated.
My exchange is 1.2 miles away.  Here is the info from my thomson plusnet router.
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 443 / 11,139
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 0.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 15.0 / 32.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.0 / 9.5
FEC Errors (Up/Down): NA / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down): NA / 3
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 2

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

Wired and wireless give the same results for speed on 3 different machines.

Part of it - and the 1mb is the reason
For the BT speedtest - see the sticky at the top of this board

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

using firefox 6.0.1 and java 1.6.0_29-b11 for the BT speedchecker http://www.speedtester.bt.com/:
i entered my phone number and it stopped on "checking details" for over a minute then:
The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

chrome wasn't listed as suitable browser and i have kept IE6 for a work reason.
is there a particular browser that it will definitively work with?  do i need to enter the service ID?

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

Usually works with Firefox but it may need two or three tries
Although it is about time you updated it

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

wow version 8? i could swear i only updated to 6 a couple of months ago.
anyway, did it with another machine with IE8 and same result.
is it working for you?
is it essential to do the speedtest with the bt one?  i have tried it about 10 times now and keep getting the same response.

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

It is the only way to check the IP profile directly
The only other thing is to phone support and ask them to check the actual IP profile.
I assume that it may have increased if you are on the updated dynamic line management system. If it has then ask them to manually change the Plusnet copy. Otherwise wait for it to happen automatically

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

OK well now im more confused,,,
i managed to get the bt test to work
Test1 comprises of two tests
1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Download  Speed
780 Kbps

0 Kbps 21000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 780 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :10271 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 443 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 9061 Kbps
2. Upstream Test:  -provides background information.
Upload Speed
358 Kbps

0 Kbps 443 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
>Upload speed achieved during the test was - 358 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 443 Kbps
then i was preparing to do the next BT test so I went  to go check the support phone number for plusnet just in case i got my login password wrong, but as i was doing that i noticed everything felt super quick again so i did another quick speedtest and got this

i wrote down the numbers then did another test and got this:

now i will do the BT advanced test

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

I suggest using this test as Plusnet can see the results and it just may be more reliable than the one you are using http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

Re: 1mbit speed - usually 7-8mbit

its the same company ookla that runs both i think.
anyway looking at my results from BT - does it indicate a line issue or plusnet service issue?
