12.6MB/sec, paying for 17+ ???

12.6MB/sec, paying for 17+  Huh
Angry
How do I get an ID to do the BT Test that the sticky refers us to?  How will that help me?
NB:  I don't understand all the guff about sync and I shouldn't have to, I'm a customer and I want what I'm paying for.  So what's the layman's answer to my first question?

Use your phone number for the ID.

Doesn't work.  There are two fields, the first one is phone number.  If I put my phone number in the second (ID) field I get an error popup saying 'invalid service ID'.

The ID field isn't or shouldn't be required - only the phone number is needed without any spaces between the area code and the number

Re: 12.6MB/sec, paying for 17+ ???

Thanks, Oldjim.  I left the ID field blank and that worked.
I'm not sure where it gets me.  No faults are reported just a duff speed, 12.3 down, 1.03 up:
How can I find out what the problem is?

Re: 12.6MB/sec, paying for 17+ ???

Looking at your posting history I haven't found any reference to speed problems so let us take this one step at a time.
Please post your router stats - speeds, noise margin and attenuation
Please post the Current Line Speed from https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed
Why do you think you should be getting speeds of 17Mbps or greater

The BT speedtester confiirms that you currently have an ip profile of 14.79.
Your download speed can never be faster than this, and typically with the bt speed tester will be a bit lower.
This page typically gives closer results to your ip profile - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics
Most people would be quite happy with your upload/download speed!

Broadband speed: We'll give you the best download speed available on your line up to 16Mb if you live in a high speed area, dependent on your location, phone line, home wiring and time of day. Because of these factors your speed may be higher or lower than up to 16Mb.

Here is the result of the BBC iplayer test.  How do I know what is good and what is poor?

My router isn't listed.  Odd as it's only a few months old.  It's a Netgear DGN-2200 which I understand isn't exactly 'low end'.

That link says my line speed is 13.4MB which is patently nonsense as three different linespeed testers show it to be 12.6MB or thereabouts.
Huh
Edit: Ah, so that's 'sync' speed.  Hmmm.  The online speed test sites don't use that - they all quote line speed which I therefore assume is the common term.  Sounds like the Government using either the RPI or the Inflation Index depending on which one is better!

Re: 12.6MB/sec, paying for 17+ ???

The link is the Plusnet mirror of the IP profile
It looks as though you have a stuck profile on Plusnet's side.
If you post the result of the BT speed test and the Plusnet profile here it should be picked up
http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,101517.0.html
Regarding the stats - assuming it uses the standard Netgear interface go to Netgear  Then click on the Show Statistics at the bottom. If it isn't there click on Router Status under Maintenance in the left hand menu then on Show Statistics at the bottom

Your grass is greener on your side of the fence, we pay the exact same.  Your speed is limited by your phone line length and quality of said copper wire, which is all BT equipment.

paying for 17+

Where on earth did you get that idea from? If you lived so far from the exchange that all was on offer was a fixed 256KB connection you'd still be paying exactly the same!
Plusnet's prices (in common with most ISPs) vary according to the total transfer data allowance.
