Starting at midnight - PPP drop was probably caused by BT doing some work in the exchange - some routers dont gracefully handle it and may report a bad response, even when it isnt properly trying.
That or the PN gateway you were trying to connect to was having a fit - but they're load balanced in a round robin format i believe - so you wouldnt get the same gateway for multiple attempts.
But i would go more with the maintenance...
