0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

I normally have good broadband speed.
Same set up for years and nothing changed here that I can think of that should be causing this.
BT wholesale test, further diagnostics:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.3 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
Broadband Speed Checker:
Ping Download Upload
1021 ms 0.28 Mb/s 0.82 Mb/s
I was going to raise a ticket but am unwilling to tick a box saying, essentially: "I might have to pay for an engineer to look at this".
Line Rate 8128 Kbps 1120 Kbps
Noise Margin 6.6 dB 7.0 dB
Line Attenuation 16.0 dB 11.0 dB
Output Power 19.8 dBm 12.9 dBm

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

What does https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed say for your current line speed?

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

Just checked, and it gives 7.1 Mbps.
Just did a broadband test, on an iPad, using wi-fi to same router, and it gave 6.97 Mbps.
So, am I right in thinking that:
Either the speed has improved (for unknown reasons) or it is something wrong with Ethernet cabling between router and the PC.
Thanks for your interest and help.

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

Are you testing using a wired or wireless connection?
You could try disconnecting and connecting again once.
Also could you post the results from http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html please

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

Thanks again.
Original tests were from wired connection to PC.
Later tests from iPad using wi-fi.
This was at 3 pm, using wi-fi:

Well that result looks about right so whatever has happened has gone away.
TIP: When posting results from ThinkBroadband copy the code from the BBCode (for forums; not supported on thinkbroadband forums) Displaying Graphs box which gives this:

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

The results above (2nd lot) were from the iPad, using wi-fi.
I am now on the PC again, using wired connections and just got:

Edit:  have done a few more tests over last 10 minutes, on iPad & (wired) PC.
Both fluctuating quite a bit, but iPad better each time.
Sometimes a lot, sometimes just a bit.
Problem in Ethernet cabling?

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

Also it's often useful to run their alternative speed test which does two download tests. The first is a single stream and the second 6 parallel streams. That can often highlight exchange contention. It can be run from http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/speedtest2.html. It recently helped me identify a flash version issue.

Thanks again.
Alternate speed tests, from the wired PC:

and again, at 4.10. Some other users of internet in the house may have caused congestion and variable speeds for this:

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

That looks as if it could be congestion and not an issue on your line.

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

Have a good look at that wired connection, it seems to me that all your slow speeds are on wired.  I'm wondering about a possible duplex mismatch or similar.  Do you have another PC or device you can connect by Ethernet for comparison?  Or check speed from wireless to wired PC?

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

If you run a test on the PC that is bad and then immediately run a test on the iPad that is good Tony is right - you need to take a look at the PC. You could start by checking the Ethernet cable (do you have another you could try?).

Re: 0.3 Mbps download today, Christmas eve

Its boxing day.  I normally get 17mb but today its 7.  I havent checked speed for ages. i turned router on off- no difference. contacted plusnet chat.  he said no problems their end; submit a request for check.  but i dont have another router to check with, and dont fancy paying.  BT check says all ok.
can it be heavy useage by others in street?  guess i'l wait a few days and check again or check in early morning.
by the way, reason i checked speed was i get some sound probs on Now TV box; sometimes sound fades
