localphone codec ( was Re: VoIP and Fax-2-Email Closure)

Just moved outgoing calls to Localphone. Everything works OK but calls so far have used G729, not very good quality audio.  Gradwell always seemed to use G711... certainly notice the difference.. Maybe things will improve.

Re: VoIP and Fax-2-Email Closure

I don't think gradwell support G729 by default. It may be that you need to change the codec order in your sip client/phone. Localphone do support G711 and suggest that they are first in the order ( at least this config for the Gigaset C460 shows that https://www.localphone.com/help/voip/device_guides/hardware/siemens/c460ip )

Re: VoIP and Fax-2-Email Closure

I tried forcing G711 (this is on a SPA3102) without success but subsequent calls have all used G711u or G711a ( the first and second choices)
so all appears well so far. I  don't know what was going on; perhaps there was congestion somewhere, but so far, so good.

Re: VoIP and Fax-2-Email Closure

Well, the same thing happened today. Calls before about 1030 (busy time?) used G729a. Some with unusable audio but some were better although audibly worse than G711. I suspect the very bad calls are due to the G729a setup bug (described in the Wikipedia article on G729. The codec is certainly being incorrectly described in SDP but not all calls are unusable). Later calls once again used G711 with good quality.  I've yet to try changing the SDP setting.
