FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

Hi all,
We’ve now got a new VoIP trial component (only available to those on the trial) which we would like you to test, this is not the final release and I anticipate that there will be a number of tweaks and cosmetic changes that need to made.
You can now find FRING at the link below:
https://voip.plus.net/login/fring
There’s still a little bit more cosmetic work to be done such as making the link visible from the Account Overview pages, adding a link to the page which details ‘what FRING is’ etc but the functionality is there and waiting to be tested by our trial users so please give it a go and feedback your experiences!
• Once you've entered your mobile details (we will try to pre-populate this field with the mobile number listed on your ‘VoIP account > Contact details’ page) you will promptly receive a text message with a link inside the text.
• To install FRING you need to open this link in your phones browser (some handsets will automatically know this is a link and highlight it once you hover over it, others may not and you may need to configure your text message settings to allow your handset to recognise this as a link) at which point you will be told whether or not your handset is compatible. If your handset is not compatible please do not choose an alternative as you risk damaging your operating system.
• On the following screen you should get a message "Connection to server needed. Connect?"
• Click Yes using your left soft key to begin the download process.
Within a few seconds, the handset accesses the Fring website. Fring is downloaded to your handset and you are ready to begin the installation process. When you install the software it will already be pre-configured with your VoIP account information.
• After that you'll need to connect to a wireless access point to make/receive calls.
Things to ensure before you try it:
-Understand what Fring is all about:
http://www.fring.com/fring_is/what_is_fring/
-Read this useful ‘getting started page’:
http://www.fring.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=view&parentcategoryid=2&pcid=0&nav=0
-This page will help you configure your phone to a GPRS/3G & Wifi access point:
http://www.fring.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=view&parentcategoryid=6&pcid=0&nav=0
-Know how to make a SIP call:
http://www.fring.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=64&nav=0,7
There are plenty of User guides and Knowledge base materials available on the Fring website which should cover any issue you come up against
http://www.fring.com/support/
As I said at the top of this post, this is a trial of the Fring service and will continue to be in a trial phase until our VoIP trial ends – full details of the Fring co-marketing agreement will shortly be announced in a separate blog early next week.
In the meantime, please use this thread to add any Fring related articles which you think will be useful for others – might be an idea to start a separate thread for any Fring related issues so we can all see them a little easier.
Cheers
Rich

Stickied for a while.
Bloomin' exciting stuff - except I finally swapped my smartphone for bog standard Nokia 6500C.
Perhaps I'll press my N80 back into service as a VOIP handset....

At what point are you getting Access Denied?  Are you on the VOIP trial?

amacgechan - you should be prompted to login before you get to that page if your not logged in already. I cant replicate any 'access denied' page which is confusing. Try clearing out your cookies?

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

Hi Rich/support
Registered my mobile number via the voip trial page.
Downloaded the Fring Software.
Logged in and Registered ok,
SIP Echo test call made.
But on a SIP outgoing call to a PSTN number, there is a long delay of about 3 seconds in transmit and receive, bit like a Satalite phone call. Quality so so

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

I tried this briefly a while back (manually configuring a default build of fring).
I only made a couple of calls and I remember quite lengthy delays. Will give it another bash when I get the chance.

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

I noticed the access denied message when using the SIP ID method of logging into the VoIP portal.
As previously found, using this method you can access extention only settings, were your email address allows global configuration and access to the FRING stuff.
I know cosmetics are currently being looked at, but that page gives no information at all. If I was not personally aware of FRING, even if having read this post, I would be a little worried.
There is no information as to what you are submitting the information for, and simply suggests you are sending details to a third party.

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

the 'Account overview' will be filled with such information over the next couple of weeks. I hope to have a fully complete release of FRING available by the end of the month which will include links to all necessary guides and walkthroughs available through FRINGs website and knowledge base.

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

With regards to the delays - Fring and Gradwell are aware of this and looking to see if theres anything they can do to stop it. Im under the impression that it seems to happen quite speradically. Is anyone else getting this 100% of the time?

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

No, it's working very well (generic Fring here) over in South Africa. So much nicer to call home for free than £2.70 per minute.
There are occasional quality issues, but I put this more down to the Internet connection than Fring/Gradwell.
I do notice that Fring will pickup a proxy as close to you as possible, as seen by the IP (and associated PTR record) that logs into Gradwell.
I dunno why I kept bothering trying to setup my E65s internal SIP client, and not move to Fring sooner.
I do wonder though, can we not get a Fring proxy on our network, which can be used as the primary connection that would be used if connected via PlusNet Broadband? I am under the impression our local peering would reduce latency more (or is there more too this Proxy setup than I assume).

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

Phil - I've posed the question to Fring to see what they say...
To everyone else, you may of noticed that we now have a logo and a 'what is Fring?' link inbedded into the 'Account overview' section of voip.plus.net.
I've also requested that the links stated at the very top of this thread also be added. If theres anything else you can think of which you feel should be added which would be beneficial to everyone else then let us know.

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

I installed Fring on my E65 a few weeks ago without any problems, I've also made VoIP calls using the standard Nokia tools, in both cases accessing via my home WLAN the quality is OK.
Making VoIP calls via Vodafone 3G or GSM connections, the delays make it unusable. I wondered if Vodafone had deliberately downgraded performance of VoIP over their network as I've yet to find a suitable explanation.

Re: FRING - https://voip.plus.net/login/fring

SmileyUpto now I was unable to get  plusnet/gradwell VOIP to work over wifi,  I had to rely on x-lite softphone which meant sitting at the PC to call.
Today I installed the plusnet/gradwell version of Fring over the generic version on my Nokia E61i.  Everything went smoothly and is working!
Call quality is OK, like others I am getting a bit of delay which I'm sure this will be sorted soon.
Generaly I find VOIP call quality is good outside of peak times.
Give me a call to test the system 6748243@sip2.plus.net.
Thanks PlusNet/Gradwell  People

Richard
