Broadband phone lack of info

When i tryed to set it up on a computer with vista the sj phone would not set up the mic. so tryed previous version, mic. ok but on a call one way speech . I was surprised by this its not what you expect from plusnet and they have no hardware recomendations either. Raised a ticket ,got try previous version of software which i mentioned i had already done so i am not happy. I then find  from 'chino'   Broadband Phone Software/Hardware Setup (reply 6Cool  the  PCPhoneRTC .   Installed and set up ok, so its working  .I think plusnet should improve the info they provide, haveing to dig deep in this forum is not a good way to do business when other providers produce turnkey solutions.

Re: Broadband phone lack of info

Hi OLD, and welcome to the forums.
PlusNet supply the voip service, they don't supply any hardware or software to use this service. There is a large number of softphones and hardware available and to ask any supplier to provide support on all of them would be impossible. PlusNet suggest the use of SjPhone ( free software ) and as such their staff have been trained on how to configure and use that. Unfortunately SjPhone does seem to have some issues with Vista, as you have discovered.
Having said that there is plenty of experience of various hard and softphones here on the forum and we're only too pleased to try and help people out.
As regards softphones and Vista, I'm not a Vista user myself but I believe people have experienced success with both X-lite ( http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html&active=4 ) and ExpressTalk ( http://www.nch.com.au/talk/be.html // make sure you download the Free basic edition and not the trial Business one ).
Here's a really good link that lists all the various hard/softphone alternatives http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/VOIP+Phones?navmenu
As you can see there are a lot of them!!!
If you are thinking of voip hardware and need some recommendations then shout up.

Re: Broadband phone lack of info

I never got on with the software programs for voip ,but starting out with a hardware device need not cost much.
you can get a linksys pap2 box off ebay for a little as £20  Grandstream sell some very nice voip phone too have a look at
http://www.grandstream.co.uk
With voip hardware you dont need to leave your computer on to make or receive calls just keep your router switched on.  You can even get cordless phone that handle normal land line calls and voip calls (siemens gigaset ip phones).
If you have a nokia mobile phone you may not even have to spend anything lookout for a nokia e65 n82 n95 &n95-8gb they can make voip calls (not vodaphone)
Speedtouch sell routers wireless or wired that have voip sockets built in and can be picked up cheap on ebay I brought 15 last year and the most I ever paid was £5.00+£4.95 post and pack look for speedtouch 716 716wl and 780wl models so if you are thinking of getting a new router it could be a great buy
You know where we are if you need anymore help on choosing or setting up any software or hardware voip equipment
