0845 and 0870 Call cost

When is something going to be done about the ridiculous call charges for 0845 and 0870 numbers?
0845 = 7.34pp day time and 3.91pp evenings - 0870 = 8.32pp and 4.89pp. Way way to high.

Re: 0845 and 0870 Call cost

I thought OFCOM said 0870 calls should be the same price as ordinary calls - Do you intend ignoring them? VOIP calls are supposed to be cheaper not twice the price of L/Line calls. Oh well the answer is I'll use my other VOIP option and you lose the money.

Re: 0845 and 0870 Call cost

I asked the same question when the changes were announced to the Home Phone product. The answer was that voip didn't come within the OFCOM regulations. See posts 119 through 126 here http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,79218.112.html
Seems a bit mean though. I could be wrong but I have a feeling that PlusNet aren't really interested in promoting their voip products any more ?Huh

Re: 0845 and 0870 Call cost

That is a shame as to me the voip part of PN packages is the hidden bonus which should be promoted more. In a world where people are trying to shave a couple of quid off everything the voip package is a winner, for instance adding daytime calls to my BT package would cost me £4.95 on top of my rental so knock that off my Pro package means in affect my BB is a fiver less.
I'm sure theres a lot of people on PN that aren't even aware of the Voip options I know I wasn't  for ages then was amazed at its capabilities & benefits.
I know exactly what you mean about 0845/0870 numbers its very annoying, the amount of time I hear local authorities using the excuse that it costs the same as a local call  Angry Surely there not that far away from reality to know that these numbers are not part of anyones landline or mobile package.
My mother (pensioner) paid for her BT package to include peak time calls so imagine trying to explain to her why she's being charged to phone the council offices.
The whole thing stinks off a scam, I think that telephone companies got that cut throat at one point that it became unfeasable to make money and so someone came up with put an 08 instead of a 01 and we'll make money again.
Anyway I digress  Smiley I also have a PN business package  which again the voip part was the decider as free calls in the day while looking for new customers is worth its weight in gold but to have to swap to my BT line to call for instance any inland revenue numbers is mad, like the man I said if PN was more competetive with their 08 numbers I would just give my money to them.

Re: 0845 and 0870 Call cost

What you have to remember is that our Plusnet account is free most sites now charge £4 per month for a normal STD number others that do it free only have 0870 incoming numbers.
Plus we get a free call allowance I get 240 free minutes other companies make you pre-pay for every minutes you use.
I am not saying Plusnet are perfect with VoIP but you must take in to account other factors above
Depending what equipment you have you can setup more than one VoIP account I use Sipgate Orbtalk on my mobile phone

Re: 0845 and 0870 Call cost

The daft thing is if they rip people off with these silly prices they will go else where so in the end they lose out. VOIP could be a good money maker if promoted properly, (which it never has been) and they don't try to rip people off with high call charges.

Re: 0845 and 0870 Call cost

I appreciate PN are providing a free STD number that goes without saying but like glloyd says it seems to be a waste of potential. I don't know what PN get charged when their system uses a 08 number but if they add 1p to the charge its 1p in their pocket and I'd imagine they'd get a lot of 1p's.
Perhaps PN need to charge this high for 08's to try and recoup the free line  Undecided but if people aren't going to use it then their getting nothing back might  as well get a load of 1p's Smiley

It seems damn daft you can call the USA and Australia cheaper than the UK on which is supposed to be a Lo Call number.

For 0845/0870 plus other high charge numbers go to
http://www.saynoto0870.com
Enter the 08 number and it should give you a normal Geographical number if not put the company name in.
I use it when calling Dell Tech support and 3HG mobile phone provider
