Hi.. been getting erratic connections to sites over the past 3-4 days, at random times.. wondering if anyone else, or someone from plus.net can help/comment?

here's a few tracerts taken at 22.21 GMT

It tends to happen to a lot of sites, but these are the first two I managed to tracert before it got fixed up again.. it's erratic as I said before.. sometimes it will be like this for minutes, sometimes seconds.

Thanks in advance for any help

These are two very normal traceroutes.

The first oen does not show the destination address, however, is obviously targetted to a machine in the US.

Many US server and/or transit providers block ping and traceroutes (same thing). Thiscreates this non-complete effect.

In most cases, it is only where you see partial packet loss, or you have had replies off a system in the past, before you should worry.

The second one could be normal or errornous. It shows loss on a system outside of the PlusNet network, for which PlusNet have no control.

Routers and gateways will usualy priorties traffic. Traffic that needs routing to another system, is more important than replying to a ping sent to itself.

This means that a rotuer can somtimes quyeue a packet in memroy for slightly longer.

Hm.. I thought those sites (first is Hotmail, missed that line) allowed full traces..

Well, anyway, at the time those were taken, I couldn't access either site.. Barrysworld.com was also slow to respond, and loading up Plus.net was also slow.

Not much to go on I guess, but I'll get trace's where possible, next time.

Not sure what else to tell ya, except it's happening to all sites etc.

Mine too.
Speed was down 20% last night and 15% today, same problems in slow loading web-pages, some long distance ones not loading at all.
Hope things improve.

PlusNet have noted a message on service status regarding this.

Emergancy transit manatainance will take place tonight.

This is a very strong possibility of your problems with long distance sites, and even some in the UK.

Ok, but.. here's one from today at 8.55am, I managed to catch before it healed itself.

Same symptoms, looks like it's probably gonna return a 404, but it does connect and just takes ages to load.. sometimes it does return the 404.

lo0.plusnet.pth-ag1.plus.net hmm that one again I get bad speeds etc when routed via that one. Try a reboot of your connection to force different routing see if you can get on via ag2 not ag1.

ed: One thing when you trace make sure Nothing is using your conenction, Outlook/IE/MSN/ICQ as they will mess up the ping trace

speed/connection issues over the past few days

Christ it's so bad I just got this forum timing out!. My line speed is 490 kilobits so it's not that. What is going on?Huh

Fascinating. I've found the same thing recently. Really long delays when trying to load pages.
Looked at the routing and found I was being routed via ag1 as well. So I did as adp450 suggested and rebooted my connection until I was routed via ag2. Result: magic!! Perceptably a great deal faster.

Support, all though it does seem isolated, I have to say, this does look liuke something that should be looked at.

Hi all,

I've made our network support team aware of this posting, and am awaiting further information to post here.

Hi again,

We've now done some testing using the servers seemingly affected, and can find no problem at the moment internally and doing ADSL connection tests.

Please let us know ASAP if the problem recurs however, and we'll investigate further for you.

speed/connection issues over the past few days

Well things have definitely slowed down my end.
Line speed using the ADSLOrg test has dropped down 10-15%.
Using the DSLReports long distance tests I'm getting pathetic speeds
around 350Kb. Pages simply don't load as fast.
I thought it might be contention finally creeping in, but surely results
would'nt be so consistent, even at 2am.
My line has been around 2% faster than my neighbours BT Openword
connection, since I tweaked MTU settings, now it's about 7-20% slower
depending on what test is taken.
Changing MTU doesn't make any difference and I've checked it with another computer without any Microsoft updates just in case.
Looks like I might have to cough up for a 1Mb line if things don't improve.
