Didn't expect slower upload for more money :-(
Maybe if I downgrade it will get faster...

I'm pretty sure that the max upload for 256 is about 32k, what are you using to measure your upload?

Err, are you sure about the upload being 40KB as that is not possible on an ADSL line. Your physical upload speed is at best 256Kbs (32KBs - in practice it will be nearer 28KB-> 30KB) and is exactly the same whether your on 512K or 1Mb connection.

So what you are seeing now is correct for the upload speed you have.

I suspect what you are using the measure the upoad transfer speed is not accurate.

Run the ADSLguide speedtest which will gve you a faily accurate idea of the max upload speed you can achieve. 37KB -> 40KB upload is not physically possible on ADSL.

should my speed not increase moving from 512 to 1mb - because it doesn't appear to be moving 100mb files any quicker - about just over an hour...

Upload is 256kb on all ADSL doesn't matter if it's 512, 1MB or 2MB, upload is still 256kb.

Download yes, upload no. ALL ADSL lines supplied by BT (and used by plusnet) on IPStream have an upload of 256Kbs.
