modem speeds versus router

Have just had a netgear dg632 router installed and uninstalled a speedtouch 330 modem.
I have noticed my speeds have dropped from around 3.2mps to under 2.0mps, is this normal.
Also do routers give you more speed than speedtouch modems.

Many thanks.

The speed may drop and your profile may take a few days to get it right. In theory a router and a modem should both give you the same speed.

A router however protects you by a firewall or NAT. Generally a router is faster as it has its own power supply and is independent of the O/S and pc.

At the end of the day it depends which handles noise on your line best.

Ran speed test this morning before work about 4.00am, 1.6mps on just the usb cable.
Plugged the ethernet cable in with the usb aswell and up to 2.7mps.

Yes but its way above broadbands speeds ..at the moment anyway Cheesy USB 1.0/1.1 is 1mb/sec and USB 2.0 I think is about 10mb/sec..something like that anyway

yes, 10mbit on usb 1.1 and 400mbit on usb 2

however, a USB modem increases CPU load and memory load on your system so slows it down quite a lot, where as an Ethernet router/modem only adds network traffic, which does not effect the system.
