intermittent connection problem

My pc is connected via a cable to a Linksys Wireless G ADSL router. It connects only intermittently. It will never connect on first attempt but sometimes will do so if I wait till I see the 'server not found' message, close internet explorer and try it again.
Often, even this will not help. I then have to switch off the router and turn it on again. It will usually connect, again after two attempts, after doing this.
I phoned plusnet support, a while ago when there was still a decent phone helpline, and the advisor told me I needed to switch off the router for at least 70 minutes to allow it to reset. I couldn't follow his explanation of where the figure of 70 minutes came from.
I've even had two computer professionals look at, but they just said intermittent faults are hard to solve.
Anyone got any ideas?
