RE: firewall

Hardware or software?
First stage is a router which does a NAT and just forward the ports needed for exchange etc to the server in question. Make sure you have all security updates specialy SQL IIS and keep upto date with them.
Stop ftp telnet etc.
Have a good virus scanner.
Force C2 security so users have good passwords
Rename Admin accounts(dont make it easy for the hacker) Disable guest accounts.

I use Outpost Firewall as its rated one of the top ones as you can add modules, the best of it is you can create rules like cisco. It has pop up stopper, dns cache and loads more.
check it out http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/

also check my site http://www.janwright.co.uk/drivec.htm and use some of the tests to see if you have any ports open.

If you have the cash get a cisco hardware Pix firewall.
