firewall reporsts 500 intrusions per day

is it normal to be probed every 2 minutes from random places around the globe mostly the USA?

i have zone alarm pro detecting these probes almost continuously at 2mins apart and blocking them.

Last intrusion reported from Denver, USA probing Port 137 as usual.

"ZoneAlarm Pro prevented a remote computer from connecting to port 137 on your computer. This connection attempt was probably legitimate network traffic. Port 137 is commonly used by networked Windows computers to enable file sharing and other resource sharing."

For this port you will be probed very often.

This port is the netbios name service - it is extremely common for this port to get scanned as it will provide any potential hacker with details about your machine and if it is networked, details of the other machines it interacts with.

As long as your firewall is actively blocking these attempts there is little to worry about although it would be worth checking if you have 'Client for Microsoft Networking' enabled in your plusnet dialup settings as this will cause your netbios details to be broadcast. If you want to check exactly what your PC is broadcasting to the outside world, go to www.grc.com and run the 'Shields Up!!' tests - you could be suprised how much your PC gives away...
