downtime and connection fee

having been told by a friend of how he just upgraded his 512mb BT line to 1mb with no extra connection fee or downtime im surprised im being told by PlusNet that to upgrade my 150 line to 512 means 7-10 days downtime and a £70.50 conection fee. Why is there such a difference?

Because of the type of package you are on.

The fact you have a 150Kb service means it is one of the old DSL Connect service.

These where operated using the DataStream product from BT. The normal 512Kb, 1024Kb & 2048Kb services are run using the IPStream service.

BT have not yet created a migration path from DataStream to IPStream, and as a result, will mean that service will need ot be terminated and restarted (cease and reprovide). This causes the downtime.

A cease and reprovide costs the same as a normal activation, hence the cost.
