clarify an exchange status checker message

Quote
Results: Inverness

BT is reporting that some of the virtual paths at this exchange are not operating within BT Wholesale's planning guidance, although they are still operating within the product specification.

At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. You should only contact support if there is no current ETA date set.

The ETA fix time is: 25 Aug 04

hmm just to clarify, does that mean that its the connection speed that could be lower or all round internet traffic with possible packet loss rearing its ugly head?

means that ur connection is likely to be contended during peak times when lots of people will be downloading.... they are allowed to contend up to 50:1... so it's within the product specifications... just it's higher than they would like it to be... they can upgrade the exchange to allow for more virtual paths and this is what will likely happen.

You could see slow speeds, and/or packet loss. You may not even see an issue at all.

Red, Amber and Green are nothing more than status codes. You could think of them more along the lines of the US terrorist warning system levels, if that they may change the status, but it doesn't mean it will or has happened (maybe not the nicest example, but the point is there).

well I asked as I have been getting the odd period of packetloss for the last 3-4 weeks and higher pings than normal, but there hasn't been the greatest weather here the last 3 weeks so was putting it down to that. Will have to monitor it for a week or 2.
