Web server, host header, static IP problem

Hi, I have a static IP, I run a web server which can be accessed via NAT on port 80, how do I access other sites other than the default site using host headers.

The server is configured correctly to support this and various websites can be accessed via the LAN.

I have tested the server using http://www.netmonitor.org/tools/test.php?type=www the host headers return the correct web sites ie site, site2and site3 are all host headers set up on the web server and the correct home pages are returned.

http://hostheadername.username.plus.com returns an error page.

would having a proper domain name make a diferance?

Could you please let me know how to get around this problem.

Thank you

Is the website hosted on your own account (shiver)?
If so I can see a webpage served on http://shiver.plus.com

yep, no problems with the default site.

Can you try gtt.shiver.plus.com you should get an Audi TT site (host header for this site is gtt)

Thanks Fa55dsl

You can't use http://gtt.shiver.plus.com/

Only the single shiver.plus.com is assigned your static IP address, and you don't have any further control over the DNS properties of this zone.

The only way you can do this, would be to have a domain hosted on your account.

If I had a domain name registered on this account ie www.shiver-devserver.co.uk would gtt.shiver-devserver.co.uk pull in the required site?

Yes.

Goto the comain control panel and goto the adanved records.

Add a record with "gtt" in the left field, the type set to A or CNAME and PRI set to blank.

If you chose CNAME, use "shiver.plus.com" in the right field
If you chose A, use your static IP in the right field.

Final question (hopefully)

Using http://www.netmonitor.org/tools/test.php?type=www it's posible to view the other web sites via there host headers, why can this not be done through a browser.

Why does it cost £45 to register a domain name? it normally costs about £6 for 2 years with my main web host (.co.uk)?

You are unable to view domains on your internal machines, using the static IP, because of limitations in your connection hardware. home home modems and routers suffer from this problem.

As for prices of domains, companies are charged a price, based on there buying power. A company purchasing 5000 domains a month will be charged less than on buying 50 domains a month.

You can still buy domains from other providers, and host them only PlusNet. You simply leave the IPSTAG at the purchasing registrar, and then transfer DNS control to PlusNet.
